I plan on attending both the scholar social and admitted students day next week. What are some of the things that I should expect from both events. I was looking at the itinerary for the last admitted students days and it seemed so jam-packed with so many things to do in so little time, did anyone feel like they didn’t get to do/see everything they hoped to. Also, how formal is the scholar social, like should I wear a nicer dress or is it more a chill wear jeans with a nice top?
We went last weekend. The scholar social was more of a jeans with a nice top event. A few were dressed up more, but very few. We did not get to do everything that Saturday. If you haven’t taken a tour before now, try to sign up for one on Friday. You can also go around campus that day as well. We didn’t make it to all of the sessions Saturday because they filled up fast. The rooms were small. I would head to one of the classroom sized sessions first and then do the one in the theater last since it seats more and it is away from the other 3. It says that registration is at 9:00, but you will want to get there early to park. Traffic was backed up in all directions to get to the Bull Street parking garage. They will also have snacks out in the morning and afternoon. The resource fair was useful. If you have any questions, you will find most departments represented to answer them. It was a great event, enjoy!
@madison2000 For the social, dressy casual. No torn jeans but dark jeans with a nice top and nice shoes will be fine. Finger foods will include chicken tenders, sliders, chips and dip as well as a mashed potato bar and desserts. Really nothing special, just mingle and maybe meet a few people. Saturday, pick and choose what you need to see and do. If this is your first time to campus then a tour is a must. IF you are really pressed for time, skip the information fair.
For the Scholar’s Social, it is usually held at the new wellness center/outdoor pool. The pool area is concrete, but it spills over onto grass (so I wouldn’t wear heels). Also, there can be a hike to the buildings, so be comfortable.
On Saturday, prioritize the sessions that will make a difference in whether you choose USC. All of them will be repeated in the future…at orientation and later at Parent’s Weekend in October. USC puts on a great event. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. I was on campus last weekend. Everything is blooming and it is very pretty.
Thanks @VAMom23 @scmadreof2 @SCready for all of the great information.
Looking that I may be pressed for time what was the least informative/most repetitive information session that you attended? I am planning on for sure taking a tour and visiting the sorority houses (since it’s something that I am genuinely interested in, and hoping to convince my dad that joining greek life with be beneficial for me) but I will be skipping the tour at the wellness center, since I presume that I will be able to see that anytime.I am hoping to make the most out of my time next weekend and hoping by the time I come home on Saturday night that I will be able to make a decision about this fall!
I would skip study abroad. You will be able to get that at some other time. If you are interested in Rushing a Sorority, make sure to go to the Greek Life seminar if they have it (it may be at Orientation…I can’t recall). Sororities rush before school starts. They also rush again in the Spring. Make sure to go to the academic calendar. i agree that if you can sneak in a tour on Friday, do it.
I was able to sign up for a tour on Friday which will take a lot of pressure off with trying to fit everything in.
I signed my son up for morning DM Business School Session B (but not A…he’s staying with a friend in a dorm and figured he’d want to sleep in a little). What goes on after the Sessions? Should I get there early to sign up for things happening on campus after the 2 morning sessions? Also-- I’m worried about parking, since I most likely will be getting there a little later than most. I don’t care if I have to pay for parking-- where would be a good alternate parking garage/lot I should have as a back-up?
@SU88BFA We went to the last ASD. There seemed to be plenty of free parking available in the Bull St. Garage that they recommended. However, traffic was really bad coming in. If you skip session A, you may be able to get free parking and miss the traffic. If you want to come in early, I’d plan on coming in REALLY early to protect your sanity.
We did Session A at the College of Engineering, and Session B with Capstone. There are some informational sessions in the Student Union (Russel House) after the sessions, but I can’t speak to them since we didn’t sit in on any of them. Instead, we took advantage of the Open Houses at a few of the dorms to get a sense of the options available (Capstone, Bates West - where the Engineering LLC is, and Green-closest to the Engineering buildings).
