My son will be applying to OSU and is interested both Honors and Scholars program. Is it reasonable to submit the application for Scholars then apply to Honors later?
He is looking for a close-knit community. Is one program a better option than the other?
I am also looking for a close-knit community and applying this year. I knew since my first tour at osu a year ago that the scholars program was better for me. I think it’s personal preference, but I like the idea living in a community that focuses on something we like. Also, you can apply to honors after you are there but the opposite is not true for scholars.
@javamom - I responded on another scholars thread, but I wanted to say again that my D loves her scholars program, and it has really helped her make this large campus manageable. She has a circle of friends, a comfort level with her classes, and support from her scholars director. Have him contact the head of a scholars program that he is interested in, or the main H&S “headquarters” at Kuhn House, and if possible, visit (or include this on a visit if you are coming).
Honors is much more selective and provides advanced, small-size classes. Both Honors and Scholars have special housing and allow students to schedule classes early. They provide excellent, close-knit communities and bountiful networking opportunities. It’s worth applying for both at the same time. I think he’d be less likely to get into Honors if he applied later, since many Honors students will be selected during early action.
Actually, students may apply to honors as OSU students provided they have the GPA to do so, at least in Arts & Sciences. Scholars is only available to students as they enter fall semester of freshman year, so if there is interest in that program, it is the only opportunity to join it.
