Scholars Program?

I need to decide in the next two days whether I want to send in my essay for the Binghamton Scholars Program. Any experiences or things you've heard about it? It sounds like a great opportunity but I keep hearing people say that it seems elitist, and as someone who hates arrogance, I don't want to surround myself with pretentious people who think they're better or something for being in the program. Also, can it isolate you from the rest of the students?

I guess my concerns are more towards the social aspect but any info about the academic rewards would be valuable, too. Is it a ton of work? Is it worth it?

Thanks so much!

I don’t have any answers to your questions, but I’m curious about this Scholars Program - is it like an Honors program? I’m transferring to Binghamton this fall. The website says you get an invitation as an incoming Freshman only, so there is no joining as a transfer? I was planning to seek out some Honors courses, but every school is different.

That’s a good question, I’m not sure about transfers. Maybe it’s only for freshmen because there’s different, specific things you do in the program every year, so it can’t just be started halfway through.

That’s a total guess though but it could be why therer’s no references to transfers.

I’m not in Scholars, but I know a few people who are. AFAIK, it basically is just a title, and also you have to take some “Scholar” classes. So basically it’s just a program over-the-top of your chosen major. I don’t think you should worry about “isolating” yourself, because if you don’t like these people, you’ll likely only be spending one class with them.
