My daughter has been accepted at Butler, along with several other schools where she has applied. Butler is one of the most expensive. She has received a scholarship offer but the cost is still higher of some of the other schools where she has applied. I was wondering if anyone on this site has experience working with the Butler office of financial aid and would be willing to share any experience or recommendation on getting additional aid/scholarships from the university.

My daughter is a freshman at Butler this year. I am assuming that the scholarship offer your daughter received was received was for an academic scholarship, based upon her SAT scores and High School grades. Many of the departments at Butler also offer additional scholarships for students with a declared major. You can check the website of the specific college, for example JCFA, for these additional scholarships. Also I assume that since it is still only January that your daughter has not received the entire financial aid package offer, which is sent to you after all of the FAFSA forms have been reviewed (in March I believe). Hope this helps. You can call the financial aid office or visit the campus. We found that the staff members at Butler are extremely professional and able & willing to answer all questions.

It's sort of like buying a car. No kidding. Basically, call them and state your case. Your daughter would like to go there, but it is going to cost more, and money is tight. We did that with one of our kids (at another school), and it worked. After telling the story to other people, I found it's not uncommon, although not well-known. I know it seems a bit unseemly at first thought, but it is done, and they are used to it. The system is broken, but that's another story.
