Hello. I have an interview for a local scholarship (of 14 counties) tomorrow. I was wondering if you guys could provide me with some advice and tips. The scholarship was based on my academics, extracurricular activities, and financial need.

What kind of questions should I expect?

Also, what should I wear (I am a guy, by the way). My mom suggested khakis, button-up shirt, tie, and blazer. I was thinking wearing a blazer may be a bit too much.

I just thought I should get some advice from people with experience.

i wore a button up shirt tucked into black slacks. didn't wear a tie or blazer or anything, that seemed a bit much to me.

they asked me:
what school are you going to go to?
what do you want to major in?
why do you want to major in that?
what do you want to do after you graduate?

those are pretty much for sure going to be asked.

and then depending on what the scholarship is for, they will ask different questions, for example, if it is a Chinese Association scholarship they might ask you how your family has affected you and how you have helped the Chinese community

I can't imagine a down-side to wearing a blazer. Few adults will think it is "too much". Better to err on the side of showing them you want to be taken seriously, in my opinion. (For a regular interview, I wouldn't recommend the blazer, but I think for a scholarship I would take the same approach as your mom.)

Don't wear sandals! (I just threw that in there because when my son was in high school he thought sandals were the same as shoes.)

Hi again. I just wanted to say thanks for the tips.

My interview went really well. I got a letter tonight saying that I have continued to the final round of the scholarship process (this interview was just to select three students from our county; I guess it could be considered semifinals).

Oh, and I ended up wearing a tie and blazer. I think it made a good impression, considering none of the other students, that I know of, wore a blazer.
