Has anyone received more than one scholarship from Pitt during this early process?

Does anyone have experience calling the college and asking they take a look at the scholarship offer?

We don’t have anything to lose because he will not go to Pitt if his total scholarship is $10,000 per year. Don’t want to sound greedy - any scholarship is very nice.

A year or so ago, there was a student with a 34 ACT who didn’t get a full tuition scholarship :(

If you are asking about another scholarship other than the full/partial scholarships, I don’t believe there is another one to stack on top (other than the engineering scholarships). I totally understand where you are coming from, DS would not have attended Pitt without the full tuition scholarship as it would have cost more than our state flagship.

I think there is a nursing scholarship that also stacks. Does anyone have direct knowledge about that?

As far as state of residence goes, I think Pitt is attracted to the Western states and tries to lure those kids. The ones from Ohio seem to get shortchanged because they’re not “exotic” enough! This is just from what I’ve observed.

Sbj, congrats to your son! His combined SAT of 1590 is awesome! He probably will have his pick of many schools, but it’s great to have the full-tuition scholarship to Pitt in his back pocket. It will certainly make the rest of the process that much less stressful.

I would agree with the other posters that Pitt is looking for kids from a little farther away. Being from the Mid-Atlantic region, I think that our kids really have to shine because there are so many top kids and great schools. All you have to do is look at the National Merit scores to see what states are the most competitive.

Onecot, I would also guess that many of the very top applicants to Pitt are interested in neuroscience. I do wish your son the best in the search this year. it does seem as though the bar gets higher each year for the full tuition scholarships.

I guess add my D to the list of 34ACT OOS kids w/o a full tuition offer. From OH. Great ECs with a focus in her intended major. A few point shy of a 4.0 weighted. A very competitive HS. 5-5-4 APs so far. Not that a $10k award isn’t appreciated, but a little disappointed.

Is there anything else that could be forthcoming? With rolling admissions we assume not.

We will still likely complete visit as she has been on campus before and is one of her top schools, but if this is it on the merit side, it doesn’t look promising.

I think that the word is out about Pitt and kids are applying earlier and earlier. It is a really nice option for a young person who wants a city school and plans to go on to graduate school–among others.

It is the school that I asked my daughter to apply to three years ago because I had read the great brochure about its merit scholarships and how many students had been awarded the top grad scholarships–like the Rhodes.

Although the merit scholarships probably come from a different pot of money, the state of Pennsylvania has drastically cut funding to Pitt in the last year or so. That could be impacting OOS monies.

I would agree with MD Mom – the word is out about Pitt and the full tuition scholarships based on merit only! I am sure Pitt is getting lots of applicants with fabulous stats and there is only so much money to go around. I know youngest will be applying early next year so fingers crossed :)

No word on any merit scholarships yet, really bums me out because D applied early, has killer recs, and we vowed we wouldn’t pay OOS tuition for any state schools, so if she doesn’t get something significant, I don’t know if Pitt will happen. And we LOVED it for her.

I applied to Pitt in mid-October and was offered admission to the honors college, but I haven’t heard anything about merit scholarships either. So if we haven’t been notified yet, does this mean we are not offered any amount? Were there any test score/GPA/essay requirements for scholarships?

I got my acceptance mid-November, w/o mention of the HC. But then, I sent my Nov. SAT (2230) on Friday, and I received an email about my essay. I think the email might’ve been personal because my name was misspelled, there was a typo, and there were specific references to my essay.

I hope I can get the full-tuition. :/

I have a 3.75 (at competitive school that is #1 in the state) with 4.0 in 8 classes Junior Year, 2230 SAT, great EC’s, great internship, great recs. My GPA isn’t great, but I’ve put SO much effort in raising it, going from a 3.4 in 9th grade when I had difficulty transitioning into my magnet program to the current 3.75.

Though Pitt is a safety for my son, he loves the city of Pittsburgh. He’s not visited Pitt yet. CMU would be a really good fit for him (very math and physics kid) but their f. aid seems pretty weak and we really need good aid wherever he goes. I helped him pick out safety schools. His three safeties have statistics as a major, they have graduate schools (since he will need graduate level courses early on in math or physics) and it seems that he is drawn to large cities (though not NY/LA size) since we live in a large city. Also, I see Pitt has wellness dorms and that appeals to my son, as well.

I’ve never been to Pittsburgh but the photos my son and dh took (they went there with my son’s symphony when he was in 8th grade) are lovely.

Pitt’s official deadline for scholarship consideration is in January (the 15th?) Maybe they are trying to review apps for an admissions decision before they consider everyone for scholarships (someone told me that these two committees are separate).
