I'm a little bit discouraged because I haven't gotten any scholarship money and I really would like to attend UNC in the fall. I've gotten everything from UNC (Honors Program and Carolina Research Scholars program) except I haven't recieved any money. Has anyone every called the Financial Aid office to ask if they can reevaluate their application for a scholarship (I'm really considering this).

You didn’t receive any Federal Aid whatsoever?

I only got the stafford loan. My EFC was high, but that was only because my mom received her pension last year, but she’ll no longer be recieving it in the next years and our financial situation will be changing (even though I doubt I can get a large financial aid packet). But, I also got a large scholarship from another school and I was hoping I could get a larger scholarship from UNC as it is my dream school, but I didn’t. It’s almost bitter sweet because I got into the Honors program, but no scholarship :(

So you have a high EFC but a parent who probably won’t commit much if any money. Exactly my situation this year. I know you CAN call the school or even specific departments you will matriculate into and ask about any money being left over, but there’s no guarantees. We ended up calling and e-mailing the business department and they did say they’d put me on the list for extra money (actually, I spoke to the dean of the College of Business) but it never happened.

Perhaps someone can help you more with this. All I have is my personal experience.

How did you find out about Carolina Research Scholars? Did they already send out emails?

Btw, I’m in the same situation as you (UNC = dream school, Honors, but no scholarship). It sucks, I know. :'(

Son received honors college, automatic entrance to Kenan-Flagler and today an invite into an inaugural program…I think it is called The Johnson Fellows…but no money. He is NMF and put UNC as first choice back in May, but hasn’t heard anything regarding scholarship. He received a fullride/honors/morehead type scholarship at another institution w/ abroad travel included, but still would have given more consideration to UNC had they given something.

I guess all those NC folks are taking the spots at the bargain rate followed by lots of OOS lining up to pay full fare as it is much less than private schools. Had S gotten $0 from any school, he would be Carolina bound as it is certainly the best value of all schools he was accepted too.
