Scholarship Thread

Anyone get any money yet?

I have an URM friend who already got full tuition...came in his student packet.

When do they start giving them out?

Is the student packet the admisisons packet? I did not get anything from Michigan yet.

Yes. My friend received a letter inside of that package informing him of his scholarship.

When do decisions on some of the smaller ones come out?

Aggh I haven't gotten the mailing yet. Hopefully tomorrow.

I have to say epsilon9090, that does not sound correct. I understand that merit scholarships come seperately - later. Can you tell me the name of the scholarship?

He said it was some type of "scholar" award...from what I can gather it is this one:

Scholar Recognition Award (SRA) Tuition for
4-5 years (depending on program of study) Varies

* Merit-based
* Michigan resident
* Recipient contributes to the overall excellence and diversity of the university community (with a particular focus on students from underrepresented minority groups or underrepresented geographic areas)

Yes, max. 8 terms standard, max. 9 terms Engineering

SBDad, that was one of my first questions to him, as I thought Umich didn't give any scholarships out yet.

Although he does attend a private HS, received a 29 on the ACT, and has a 3.8+ GPA, it puzzles me that Umich gave all this money out that fast.

Come to think of it, a few years ago the valedictorian at our HS was an URM, and had everything paid to attend Umich, room and board included, but chose to attend some other school. Last year there was a 1/2 Hispanic kid who got a full ride, but no room and board paid.

Thanks. Well now it makes sense. This scholarship would be illegal after 11/7/06 with the passage of Proposal 2.

See SBDad, I'm not so sure that is true, which has me confused. Just look at the language of the ballot. It does not cite scholarships specifically. But the scholarship is question directly violates prop 2.

The Secretary of State writes the language that voters will see on the ballot for all initiatives. We believe that the exact language of the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative -- the language that appeared on the MCRI petitions and what will be inserted into the Constitution once the Initiative passes -- would have been the most straightforward language to put on the ballot and we urged the Secretary of State to use that language. However, the Secretary of State made the decision to change the language to the text below and we believe that this language, while not as accurate as the language that appeared on the petitions and what will be inserted into the Constitution after the Initiative passes, is fair. Below the ballot language, you will find the actual language of the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative.

BALLOT LANGUAGE

A PROPOSAL TO AMEND THE STATE CONSTITUTION TO BAN AFFIRMATIVE ACTION PROGRAMS THAT GIVE PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT TO GROUPS OR INDIVIDUALS BASED ON THEIR RACE, GENDER, COLOR, ETHNICITY OR NATIONAL ORIGIN FOR PUBLIC EMPLOYMENT, EDUCATION OR CONTRACTING PURPOSES

The proposed constitutional amendment would:

• Ban public institutions from using affirmative action programs that give preferential treatment to groups or individuals based on their race, gender, color, ethnicity or national origin for public employment, education or contracting purposes. Public institutions affected by the proposal include state government, local governments, public colleges and universities, community colleges and school districts.

• Prohibit public institutions from discriminating against groups or individuals due to their gender, ethnicity, race, color or national origin. (A separate provision of the state constitution already prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color or national origin.)

Should this proposal be adopted? YES or NO.

ACTUAL LANGUAGE

Note: This is not the language that voters will see on the November ballot, however, this is the language that will be inserted into the Michigan Constitution when the Michigan Civil Rights Initiative passes in November.

ARTICLE I, SECTION 26:

Civil Rights.

(1) The University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Wayne State University, and any other public college or university, community college, or school district shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.

(2) The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.

(3) For the purposes of this section "state" includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the state itself, any city, county, any public college, university, or community college, school district, or other political subdivision or governmental instrumentality of or within the State of Michigan not included in sub-section 1.

(4) This section does not prohibit action that must be taken to establish or maintain eligibility for any federal program, if ineligibility would result in a loss of federal funds to the state.

(5) Nothing in this section shall be interpreted as prohibiting bona fide qualifications based on sex that are reasonably necessary to the normal operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.

(6) The remedies available for violations of this section shall be the same, regardless of the injured party's race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin, as are otherwise available for violations of Michigan anti-discrimination law.

(7) This section shall be self-executing. If any part or parts of this section are found to be in conflict with the United States Constitution or federal law, the section shall be implemented to the maximum extent that the United States Constitution and federal law permit. Any provision held invalid shall be severable from the remaining portions of this section.

(8) This section applies only to action taken after the effective date of this section.

(9) This section does not invalidate any court order or consent decree that is in force as of the effective date of this section.

Although the ballot does specifically limit race preference, does this apply to financial aid? I am pretty sure it does, but I am no lawyer.

If anyone has any info on anyone getting scholarships, please reply to this thread. You never know, it might serve as a goldmine for the upcoming debate on the issue :)

UPDATE:

Phone call person said that they aren't starting to review applications for scholarships in January.

I smell deceit/inconsistency.

I got a Scholarship
Michigan Scholar (an OOS only award)
$60,000 over four years

Do you mean they aren't starting to review applications for scholarship UNTIL January? That would be normal operating procedure. And I hope they knew you were talking merit, not need-based.

Thanks so much for the ballot language. I think it is abundantly clear that university sponsored scholarship will not be able to use URM status as a factor.

Did you ask them why some merit scholarships have been given out already if they aren't going start reviewing them until January?

It was merit scholarships I asked about.

I'm thinking the lady got confused, because UM would wait until Jan. for need-based because of the FAFSA. But she did specifically say MERIT based.

Freakin' Umich. Don't lie to me when all these kids are getting scholarships.

Valawe, are you Black/Hispanic/Native American?

Not to be offensive, but these days race matters more than ever in these things.

Congratulations Valawe. Since the scholarship recognizes diversity, I assume that you are a URM?

Just called again, here is the official, up-to-date info by your dedicated epsilon9090:

-Merit-based scholarships are going to START being reviewed in mid-December to January. They are independent of your FAFSA/PROFILE, so the only material reviewed is your APPLICATION. I did NOT ask about URMs getting money yet, because I did not want to **** the lady off. If someone else wants to ask, the # is 734.763.6600

-Need-based scholarships are based SOLELY on the PROFILE/FAFSA. They haven't started on those yet.

So will U of M look at mid-year grades in making scholarship decisions?
I'm kind of slacking off this 1st semester, and unlike my usual straight A's (4.0GPA now), I'll probably have 3 A's, 1 A-, 2 B-'s. My grades will be sent January 20, if that makes any difference.

No, I am white. I am guessing it is because I am from New Hampshire and I guess that U Mich doesn't get many NH people.

I got my acceptance letter by mail today. I did not receive any scholarship related things in it.

yeah! I got a 60,000 scholarship over 4 yrs too! But I don't see it on the wolverine access...

do you know how many recieve this scholarship? (MSA)

The scholarship awards come with the admission letters right?

pladitudinarian, what state are you from and what race are you?

Seems OOSers are getting big bonuses.

Nice job!
