Scholarships Anyone?

I have a question for those of you that received both merit and financial need money. Did the university subtract the EFC from the COA to determine your need award? If so, was the merit award then subtracted from the COA minus EFC amount?

is syracuse generous with their scholarship offers? i got an 8000 scholarship but my stats are only decent compared to everyone elses.

anovice...the honors letter is separate, so you may not have recieved it yet.

I was accepted to the honors program a few days ago and also recieved the Chancellor's (12k) - which is the highest merit scholarship they offer...

Unfortunately, the rest of my financial aid award (which came a few days later) was not that appealing...I have also heard some bad things about Syracuse (...I was out at Ithaca College this week) and supposedly it is nearly impossible to get involved in some organizations freshman year (like newspaper, tv station, ect)...it's the opposite at Ithaca...and they paid for me to visit them...and interviewed me for a full-ride scholarship (valued at around 35k a year).

So, I'm thinking Syracuse...might be out of the running.

what kind of bad things did you hear about syracuse? besides the fact that its hard to get involved with some of those organizations were there other things?

cboryca22, unless money is that much of an issue, don't get bought off so quickly. In most areas, Syracuse has a much higher academic rating. Moreover, Syracuse has a much higher endowment, which means better professor salaries, more money for maintenance etc.

All I am saying is not to let marketing sway you. Visit each school and check out any majors of interest.

My son will probably choose Syracuse to study engineering with a double major in Math or Geography. We visited and spoke to some professors but it was hard to tell what these departments are like. Anyone know about the quality of these departments or where we can go to find out?

D received excellent aid both merit and need based. Merit: Chancellor's for $8,000, SU Merit Scholarship of $4,000 Need: Syracuse Grant, $14,000 and Sub Stafford Loan $2,625 total package $28,625 whooohoooo!!!! Didn't expect all of this but it certainly makes us/her take a closer look at Syracuse .

im an international and got the 12k / year founders scholarship. 2.5 min gpa etc.

MarylandMom, we're in the same position. Syracuse gave my daughter the Founder's Scholarship & Merit Scholarship, a Syracuse grant, too. Whew, a generous offer that has all our attention. And the Honors Program, too.
She's been accepted at other terrific schools, but haven't heard about FinAid at those yet. It's going to be a hard choice.

Congrats to you and D, Alia! It is going to be very difficult over the next few weeks. D has 5 acceptances and is awaiting word on the 5 remaining applications. I don't know how she'll decide but it is a great position to be in. This has been a really stressful time - it will be great to see it finally over and the decision made.
