scholarships/fin aid is up!

Oh, I want to add that I agree with cheapseats. UMD is a pretty good school and extra scholarship does indeed make it very tempting.

dylin, i remember you got a full scholarship to UMD. That is great. You got into some great schools also. Like I said everyone has a different scenerio. I think, and correct me if I am wrong, you want to get into an IB firm. UMD is not going to be able to do that for you. If you want that at UMD you'll have to fight for it on your own and will be at a huge disadvantage. Stern, however, will do this for you.

Me personally. I have been interning at an IT company. I like it. I am interested in it. I don't particularly like computers but there is more to IT than being the one doing the computer work. For me operation management and information systems would be a valuable majors to have. UMD is good at both of these and coincidentially it is their highest paying majors.

56,000 and 53,000 on average starting pay out of college.

I will have to see but I don't have options like you do, (pssss... your a genious) so i think most people would agree that wisconsin at 30,000, Penn State at 33,000, or Umich not stern at 40,000 is not worth the difference.
Everyone's situation is different.

That full scholarship must be tempting...

Haha, yea. and no, I'm definitely not a genius. 4/9 people who applied were accepted into MIT from my school and I wasn't one of them. =( You go to Wootton right? Now...David Chen is a genius

well, yeah. lol. that goes without saying. haha.

he and a couple others won a science competition right. THat was the state competition. Isn't nationals in april... I guess we have academics in place of sports to cheer for :)

wait a minute...UMich isn't 40K a year?? I thought it was like.....33.....

college board says....
ut-of-state tuition and fees: $27,601
Room and board: $7,374
Books and supplies: $980
Estimated personal expenses: $2,076

what is that? near 38,000? you could take out the 2,076 so 36,000??

I meant "Umich not ross" not 'not stern'. I am waitlisted and that means a definate no to ross. so Umich without ross at 40,000(i guess 36,000) is not worth the difference.

oh, oops, my bad

I really don't think UMD is that expensive if you're in state... it's about 20 a year if you're living on campus (and in state).

Yeah I got the 8K a year Presidential Scholarship. Nice to know someone thinks I'm smart after my Barnard rejection, but I still don't really want to go here.

dylin88, i just wanted to say that i know david chen!!! hahaha, oh moco. i find it so funny how everyone ends up knowing each other somehow.

I just got some more aid from the maryland higher education commission. It pushes up my scholarship and grant total to $10,000 which is great. I will only have to pay $9,000 myself and I have 4,600 in loans so I really only need about 4,500. A few more loans would be very helpful but I can come up with this with a job or something but my questions are these

What really is the work study? I have it for 1,400 and that will cut down the payments a little but would i just be better served getting a job? What are the benefits and what does maryland have us do?

When do we have to turn in the financial confirmation? I am not sure which loan to take or what the loans exactly are. I have to look into it more so i need some time. When do we have to turn it in by?

I'm so happy!! We just got 3,000 in the mail from Maryland Higher Education Commission! I assume it's mailed directly to College Park and they deduct it from your bill.

thats what I got, 3,000 is the max award that they give out so that is good for both of us. Do we send that to UMD??? I have it signed and checked the accept box.

You check the "I accept" collum and mail it back to the address at the top of the page.......................

yeah, my question looked kinda stupid but I thought you meant it was mailed directly to UMCP? I already had it in its envelope and was going to drop in the mail. I just don't know how or when exactly it gets to UMD.

It is kind of puzzling.................our letter only listed College Park. CP must be hooked up to MHEC because how else would MHEC know we accepted admission? I think then MHEC forwards it to CP. Which may be why CP doesn't give more aid.............they assume people of a certain income are going to get the state aid also.....hmmmmmmmmmmmm..............Another college listed the same MHEC grant in their fin aid package as possible grant about a month ago! Now I understand what it all means.

OK- we got a subsidised stafford loan in our package. We have to "pick a lender" when we accept our financial aid package. They offer several lenders with no info. and I didn't know who to pick. I called the fin. aid office and the girl, (doesn't sound too bright) tells me, "they are all the same, just pick one". Well, they are NOT all the same. I was able to find info after looking harder and just checking 2 of them offer the following differences: Bank of America has NO fees. College board has a 3 percent fee. That is a big difference if you ask me. Apparently college board gives back 3 % if you pay up on time. Still have to check the others.................does anyone else have any info on what to do? Need help. Not good at this...............................

Yeah i REALLY need to look into all of that. When does the financial aid have to be accepted by?

i am really trying to decide if I should do the work study. Here is the page with all the info for it.
http://www.financialaid.umd.edu/OSFA/WScell2.html

I wonder if I could get more trying to find work on my own. $1400 a year really isn't anything but I guess it is easy work.

I think the fin. aid thing has to be submitted by the end of this month.
