Recently, I've been looking into applying for boarding school for the 2013-2014 year, as a 10th grader. My family is fairly middle class, with an average income of about 90K.

I haven't been able to get much information about financial aid yet, but how much can I expect from a HADES school - assuming I'm accepted first, of course ;) ? Do the highly selective school offer more financial aid than average boarding schools?
Also, does anyone know of merit scholarships that are offered to incoming 10th grade girls? I have been able to find some prestigious scholarships (CDB, Icahn, etc.) from various schools and organizations, but their requirements are that the applicant be applying for 9th grade or below...which may be a bit late in my case.

My parents aren't too enthusiastic about spending too much on my high school education, especially since I plan on going to grad school and beyond, which should be a burden on their wallets as well as my own. Plus, I have two younger siblings at home with similar scenarios.

I would appreciate any help! Thank you!

Column 1: Annual FA budget divided by TOTAL enrolled students (this is NOT average award size)
Column 2: Annual FA budget as a percentage of Endowment size
Column 3: Percentage of students receiving FA
Column 4: Total enrolled students
Column 5: Annual FA budget ($million)
Column 6: Endowment ($million)

Emma Willard, Loomis Chaffee & Cate really stand out in their commitment to funding FA, as compared to the relative size of their endowment

If you want a predictor of how much FA you could get, theres a calculator on the Hotchkiss website where you put in your income, assets, etc., and it gives you an estimate of what you could receive. To find it just go to the financial aid section of their website. You may not be applying to Hotchkiss, and the estimator only uses a simple formula to make their predictions, but the tool should give you a good idea of how much you would receive from a hades school. For the most part, hades schools give more money because they have larger endowments, but this is not true in everyone’s situation. The only school I know of that gives merit scholarships is Lawrenceville but Im not sure if they give them to 10th graders. And there are of course other schools that give awards based on merit it’s just that Im not aware of them…Good luck!

The average aid grant is about 36,000 $ at hotchkiss. Their budget this year was 8.8 million dollars for about 212 students who recieved FA

Don’t count out some of the smaller schools, some people get more aid for smaller non-HADES schools than they do from HADES schools. Andover and I believe St.Andrew’s School(you’re going to have to check me on this) have a policy where if you are accepted they will meet 100% of your demonstrated need.
