I had the intention of staying at the community college for 2 years in order to save money, but with my 25 AP credits and 20 credits from fall/winter terms at the community college my advisor says I can graduate with an associates degree after the spring semester and then transfer to a 4-year university. (60 credits)
Do I have any shot at getting a transfer scholarship for an in-state Maryland university such as UMD? I will have only been at the community college for 1 year and my GPA with 20 credits so far is 3.9.
I'm planning to major in biochemistry and do pre-pharmacy, and now I have to decide on a 4-year university. Are there any out of state universities which would offer a good transfer scholarship? Thanks, I wasn't anticipating transferring out of community college so soon and now I only have a few months to decide on a 4-year university.

There are relatively few merit scholarships for transfers, see the link in the Resources sticky thread at the top of the Transfer Students forum.

If you are attending a MD CC, your counselor there is likely to be the best source of information about the availability of scholarships for IS publics.

I transferred out of a CC, and it is tough finding good transfer scholarships even if you spent 2 years there.

Even if you can get the associates degree, you do not have to leave the CC. You can stay as an undeclared or liberal arts major and take general elective courses that will help you when you transfer (unless your AP courses satisfy many of them - that will depend on the schools you’re looking to transfer to). Or you could take a year off and work while taking the time to look into 4-year schools. Or go to school part-time if you need to be a student to stay on health insurance or for other reasons, and work while checking out schools.

Which Maryland CC are you attending? Happykid is at Montgomery College, and the Transfer Counselor there is excellent. If you are at MC, make an appointment with the transfer counselor, and get advice about this issue. If you aren’t at MC, visit their website and read through the information on the Transfer pages.

Towson does have scholarships for graduates from the MD CCs, but I think applications for admission were due Dec. 2. I don’t know about the other MD universities.

Good luck!

The universities in my state have really good transfer scholarships for students in the CC honor society (there is a national one …). For other transfer students, some have small scholarships that are helpful. For example, my son transferred after freshman year. He had a pretty large scholarship at the first school, but he didn’t want to return. He was able to get $2000 at the new school. Every dollar helps, so we were happy to get it! Go to the financial aid site for each school you are considering, and search for transfer scholarships. I am glad we knew my son should get his scholarship, which was supposed to be automatic. Because of how they coded his admission, they never awarded him the scholarship. My S asked about it twice & was blown off. I emailed the associate director & voila … an apology for the oversight & $2000.

^Phi Theta Kappa (a link to scholarships for PTK are given in the thread I mentioned above).

We have had students at our MD CC win Coca-Cola scholarships the past couple of years. I agree with the above posters that you should tap the resources at your college. They will be the best source for what students from your CC have done.
