Anybody have a comprehensive list of scholarships that I can apply to as a JUNIOR (and possibly their deadlines if possible, if not I can just search them up myself)? I’ve heard of the new Calvin Coolidge scholarship but that’s about it and my own research into it has only turned up a few local ones.
The best aid comes from the schools themselves. How much of a gap are you trying to cover?
Look at the first post in this link. There are a bunch of links about scholarships and the like. BUT it’s pretty old info, so you need to check with the colleges to see if the scholarship awards are still offered.
Really, the best scholarships are offered from the schools which accept you. But some colleges don’t give merit scholarships…at all. None.
Until you have an ACT or SAT score, it’s impossible to suggest outside scholarships…or,even colleges that award guaranteed scholarships.
Also, many, many of the more generous outside scholarships have a financial newd component. If your family in one is $130,000, you won’t meet that criteria.
Hoping @sybbie719 explains the NYS STEM awards. Maybe this applies to you.
ETA…here you go.
@CourtneyThurston any suggestions?
STEM is not a junior scholarship.
Not a junior scholarship…but if he is a STEM major in the top 10% of his, class…that would help at the SUNY schools…wouldn’t it?
To,the OP…are you thinking you can amass enough outside scholarship money to cover your college costs…now…as a junior.
Let Op give his stats (gpa rank, scores, his interest ,perhaps his financial parameters and where he is looking to attend ad perhaps we can better help gim
If you really want college suggestions, or scholarship suggestions, @sybbie719 is correct.
You are asking for information we can not give you…because we don’t know YOUR info.
@thumper1 No I was just wondering if there were other scholarship programs (similar to the Calvin Coolidge scholarship) that are exclusive to juniors that I can apply to now; I will also be applying to the senior-exclusive scholarships come the school year.
I saw the link you sent me about regarding the NYState STEM incentive program. However, the agreements on the contract state that I must “agree to live in NYS and work in a STEM field in NYS for five years after graduation.” Does this include going to a medical school//would this restrict me from applying to medical schools? Also, I didn’t realize Cornell participated in this program (I’ve heard people in the past say Cornell is a part state school – is this why?) and if I were to participate would I be restricted in any way to be able to apply to only a certain Cornell undergrad school?
My school doesn’t rank but my GPA is estimated to be +/- 3.87 GPA UW. I haven’t taken the ACT yet, will do so in April, my combined family bracket is ~130k, I’m interested in STEM. Hoping to eventually apply to schools like Duke, JHU, CMU, Cornell, Nwestern, UPenn, UVA, Wake Forest, Emory, CWRU, Northeastern, Fordham and possibly a couple SUNYs. Also interested in the Sophie Davis 7 year BS/MD program which I believe is a CUNY.
Also important to note is my high school does not rank and restricts you to applying to 9 (rare cases 10) schools. Also do not offer APs so no weighted GPA system/rankings
The stem incentive scholarship does not cover majoring in stem for med school. Of op goes to med school he would have to repay the scholarship. If op were to attend the Cornell land grant schools it would cover up to the cost of SUNY tuition
UPenn, Northwestern, Cornell, dont give ANY merit, scholarships…only need based. JHU, CMU, Emory, UVA, wake Forest and Northeastern give some very competitive merit awards.
It is NOT likely that you can amass outside scholarships to cover the costs of these colleges.
CWRU gives merit aid.
SUNY and CUNY are instate for you…can your family pay the instate costs for you to attend these schools?
How much can your parents pay for YOUR college, annually? Ask them.
It’s late. I think everything OTHER than Coolidge already closed.
Don’t miss the boat for senior scholarships, which thankfully are 99% of them (BUT NOT AFTER SENIOR YEAR!!! Opportunities really dry up.) You’ll want to start applying as early as July/August.
@CourtneyThurston this family has $130,000 income. Any suggestions of scholarships that do not consider financial neeed?
There aren’t many that won’t consider financial need at all. Coke is the only one that comes to mind.
For reference, when I was applying, my family income was 72k, and I felt that that was very high. It certainly was for competitions I won (barely, imo) like Jack Kent Cooke where the hard upper limit is 95k.
This kid should probably have a merit scholarship strategy when applying for schools because of the financial piece and lack of 4.0.
For the Gates Millenium scholarship, are you supposed to apply as you’re going into your senior year or after senior year before college? Not sure if this is the ideal place to ask but…
Gates no longer exists.
Gates was also only for Pell eligible students (ie very low incomes) who were also racial/ethnic minorities.
Gates Millennium has both race and need based components. You do not meet the need based component. The scholarship also has gone thru a redesign, and while the specifics haven’t been revealed (at least I haven’t seen them) I doubt the income you state will be eligible. You are smart to already be thinking about this, read the links and think about what advice people are giving you - many posters here have a depth of experience and knowledge that guidance counselors lack, especially about merit aid and money issues!
