Is there any scholarship that offers you a full ride at NYU? Or are there any good scholarships in general?
No. NYU is known to be stingy with aid - they don’t meet need, so have no obligation to provide sufficient scholarships to those they admit.
Are you HEOP? A math or art prodigy? In this case you may have as shot at a full tuition scholarship (if you also have need)
What’s your EFC?
Run the NPC. Is the net cost of NYU affordable?
There are some full/ partial tuition “named” scholarship programs depending on your background, major and whether you have financial need. There are not any full ride scholarships, but if you have substantial need and if NYU really wants you, that may be a possibility.
In general, NYU will award financial aid based on how much they want you–so there is always a “merit” component. If you do not have any need, there are fewer options–but there are art and music merit scholarships and the MLK scholarships that all students are considered for.
I’d love to hear more experienced CC posters talk about how often NYU offers aid, but it is only granted for the first year, then they strand people financially.
@NJRoadie my daughter graduated from NYU/Tisch in May. She received a substantial scholarship that remained the same all 4 years that she was there and even received an additional scholarship her senior year in recognition of her grades while she was in school. That scholarship was to help her reduce the amount of loans she would have to take her senior year and was a wonderful surprise. The scholarships she received were based on a combination of merit and need, so as long as she maintained the required GPA and still met financial need she did not lose them.
@NJRoadie NYU scholarships and financial aid packages are granted for all 4 years. If there is a major change in finances, there might be some adjustment to the package–but I have not heard of people being “stranded financially”. The only reason this would happen is if there was a major change in income (not your typically annual increase) or if a student does not maintain their required GPA. Occasionally students might be granted a special scholarship that is granted or sponsored by their department. These awards may be a one time grant. D applied for an art scholarship sponsored by an outside organization in an artist’s memory. It was awarded through the school. The $3,000 award was a nice little bonus that covered the cost of art supplies, books and spending money.
^no, financial aid is not granted “for 4 years”. It really depends on the type of aid.
When financial aid is determined, it is the school’s expectation that they are awarding it as a 4 year package. If the student’s profile does not change much, neither will the financial aid. With approximately the same EFC each year, you should expect the same aid. The intention is not to give it out on a one time basis if the student has met their academic requirements and if financials are the same.
