Any experience what kind of scholarships Cal Poly might offer for out of state students? Is in-state tuition rate available for any out of state student?
Cal Poly is a public school intended to educate California residents. It is funded by California State taxes so the majority of the large fees are compensated to instate residents, through state scholarship programs. Out of state students bring in revenue by paying the OOS tuition and fees. You wanna play in California, you gotta pay.
You should be looking at private scholarships from your area and checking with the financial aid office to see if there is anything where you would be qualified as an OOS student. These are usually smaller and one-time awards and would not cover the OOS fees.
In-state tuition rates are for in-state students. Out of state tuition rates are for OOS students. Cal Poly SLO’s does offer scholarships but most will be for in-state applicants. Check this link to see if there are any you qualify. Have you been accepted for ED? Your FA packages should be included in your acceptance, so if you do qualify for some scholarships they should be listed. If you applied RD, you will have to wait for an acceptance and FA package to see if you have qualified.

Thanks. I was asking because for example University of Texas has schools that offer in state tuition for those out of state students who get academic excellence scholarships. Texas sounds pretty friendly state, you get to play without having to pay. Or maybe they are just so wealthy down there.
A school’s propensity to award merit aid is directly related to 2 things, how hard it is to get in and how much money they have to give. Admission to CP iscompetitive for most majors and hyper competitive for a few and they don’t have a lot of excess cash. My son, OOS, was awarded a 2k per year Outreach Scholarship. In contrast he was awarded $25k per year at Case. The deal is, Case is WAY more expensive, so the net was nearly the same. The bottom line is, at $36k per year (200 hours x $249 plus instate tuition) CP is still a good deal. You’d need to get close to $100k at any private, they’re all $60k/yr now, to be at the same net expense as CP with no aid. As for getting instate in CA as an OOS, it’s nearly impossible. There are in state schools that will offer in state or even waive tuition all together, but they are either hyper restrictive (NMF for example) or they aren’t selective. If you’re looking for a “deal” and have a high achieving student, there are schools out there with decent to pretty good engineering that waive tuition. Some are guaranteed, some you don’t know until after they are admitted. Alabama and Utah are good examples. Some however come with extremely stringent standards to keep the scholarship. For example at Utah, students must maintain a 3.6 GPA. For even the smartest kids, that is tough in engineering. Often it can fall simply based on the professor mix they get. Good luck!
This is what irks me. My parents lived in California for 20+ years, paying their fair share of taxes the entire time. Yet, since we’ve been living OOS, we’ll have to pay OOS tuition.
Nothing I can really do though
