Was that the CDB scholarship? My son just got accepted to Choate and got the Headmaster’s Scholarship after receiving the CDB scholarship last July. A lot to consider when we thought we loved Phillips Exeter!

Other then financial aid, a merit scholarship is the only one I can think of. Sometimes called leadership if I am correct.
This is a very interesting thread. Acceptances here, but no merit scholarships for our student this year and we applied FP.
Looking ahead, we have a daughter who is applying for NEXT year. We have quite a dilemma surrounding our second child and our ability to pay in full. Our’13 income put us well above FA qualification due to a corporate “Golden Handshake” payout. However, we are expecting '14 income to be less than 1/2 of this year, probably within the top 1/4 of the FA “range” of up to $250k. That being said, we did qualify the schools when we applied that they would indeed allow for a change of payment status, but are still very nervous about 1) not receiving the aid that we need going forward for both, and 2) our second child being waitlisted (even at the same school) due to aid needs. Has anyone had a change of payment status due to younger siblings coming in? Thanks in advance for any insight. Our local co-ed IB catholic school is starting to look better and better. . .
@itcannotbetrue please check you PM.
I also left a message in PM
@RedSoxFan18 and @mexusa could you post them here on the forum as well so all of us can benefit from the insight… if it is not too personal.
Basically I pointed out that the IB program was created to become a more local solution to sending diplomats’ children to BS. So, a well-run IB program does have a great deal of rigor and does not differ that much from most BS curriculum.
@CaringMom11 I’ll share the following:
I have 3 kids - DS1 is currently a Senior at Andover. DD in in 9th Grade at the local public. DS2 is a 7th grader who wants to attend BS. My income can vary quite a bit year to year.
Four years ago DS1 applied to Exeter, Andover, and SPS to enter in 9th grade. We applied for aid at all 3 schools. DS1 was waitlisted at all 3.
Three years ago DS1 wants to give it another try. We decide to cast a wider net, use a different aid strategy and risk DS1 getting into a school that we might not be able to pay for. He is fully aware of the risk and still wants to move forward. We settle on Andover, Exeter, Peddie and Loomis. Added Peddie as Mom is an alum and they offer merit money. Add Loomis as we think less selective than Exeter or Andover so applying for Aid might not prevent admissions. I setup meetings with Exeter and Andover FA officers. Exeter tells me not to apply for FA - I will not get any and it only hurts DS1 chances to get in. Andover encourages us to apply for aid as it will have no adverse impact on DS1s chances - this is even more strongly encouraged by the Andover soccer coach (DS1 is strong soccer player / recruited athlete). So we apply for aid at Anover but apply to Exeter as a Full Pay. Final application stats: Exeter FP, Andover FA, Loomis FA, Peddie FA and hope for merit. Application results: Exeter Admitted, Andover Admitted with FA, Loomis Waitlisted, Peddie with FA. DS1 enrolled at Andover. My income varied while DS1 was at Andover, Andover never lowered the FA award, in fact it went up in the final year.
This year DD applied to Andover, Choate, Milton as a 10th grader. She did not apply last year. I wondered what to do about aid. 2014 was a strong year, it was also a non repeatable year. I will make substantially less in '15 than I did in '14. I talk to several college FA offices about DS1. I’m not surprised that based on '14 income they will not consider aid so college apps are FP. I’m pleasantly surprised that they all will allow us to apply for college aid in the future and that if my income drops to previous levels I will have a reasonable chance at aid.
On the BS front we applied for FA for DD since BS are often more generous than colleges. BS considers siblings in other boardign schools or college when they make FA awards. In February Choate reaches out to let me know that if DS is offered admission it will be as a FP and they want to know if we would consider that. I have a similar conversation with the Choate FA office as I did with colleges and they indicate that if my income returns to what I call normal levels we would likely be considered for FA in future years. Given this I tell Choate we would consider FP. March 10 rolls in and DD is Accepted at Andover with FA, Milton with FA, and waitlisted at Choate. Andover will be cheaper/year than Milton. DD has revisit days scheduled. I’m hoping she prefers Andover.
That’s great summary @RedSoxFan18 , thank you. Best wishes for your daughter’s decision.It’s great that you have FA with both the schools, you can’t go wrong with either of them while I can understand it would be a lot easier at Andover given your son attended. My son is also accepted at Milton. We didn’t apply to Andover/Exeter.
Congrats to your son!!
They are both fantastic places and I’m sure DD will be happy at either one. More than anything I want her to love where she goes and hope she takes advantage of the opportunity. There is a chance she could want to return to the local public - as much as I like the idea of seeing her daily it would be a shame for her to miss the BS experience.
