I’ve heard a rumor that the full-tuition and other scholarships are no longer automatic. The website does not really give much detail.
Any truth to this?
It’s be a shame. Not sure I will apply this year if they’re competitive.

They have not released the changes being made to scholarships for 2017 yet. It should be released in mid-July.
Temple gave out $22 million more in merit scholarships than was budgeted. The Provost in charge of the program was fired. Merit will likely become competitive or the automatic merit thresholds will be raised.
Which is too bad because it was lifting them from urban local school to competitive with many oos flagships and quasi flagship universities (Miami Ohio, bama…)
Im hoping they just raise the threshold, as well as eliminate some of the lower automatic scholarships they gave like $9000 for 3.25 weighted GPA and even less stats than that to help correct the overage.
The President is now on his way out over this too, it seems.
Has anyone heard any more about this? I saw the current merit scholarship page is vague about amounts, but does say recipients are selected (not automatic).
.This is from admissions page right now.
“Temple awards more than $100 million in scholarships each year, with many of our first-year students receiving academic scholarships. There is no separate application required, and additional details on eligibility considerations will be posted for our 2017 class in August.”
so id say they are still sorting this issue out. my guess is schollies will still be available with weighted gpa of 3.6 and good test scores(wherever Temple draw that line). not necc automatic, in fact probably not but Temple will still want to attract kids with stats in this range so kids in this range will still have very good shot at some merit aid.
Why not require the kids that want merit to apply Early. And then cap the number of awards so those who lock in early get the automatic merit, and when they run out of spots the program is full. It creates a sense of urgency and ensures they don’t have too many in the program again…
According to the article, “For next fall, the thresholds will be raised, Kaiser said, and the number of scholarships will be capped. In other words, there’s no guarantee that a student who hits the threshold will get the aid.”
I think they are rethinking the automatic scholarship since the whole $22 million deficit came to light. Miami Ohio offers a range depending on GPA/SAT which will probably be the way Temple will go. It would be a shame if they don’t continue some kind of incentive. I know my DD wouldn’t have been able to attend without one since we are OOS.
what @jbsmom said sounds like how Pitt does it.
I’ve used the net price calculator and it looks like the max it is showing is $18,000 now (tuition is 23k dos).
Financial aid page is still showing scholarships as going up to full-tuition.
I know this is an older thread but when the Temple rep came to my HS she said that scholarships are now holistic. They don’t guarantee them based on just GPA/SAT score.
They also finally updated the website:

Thanks!
The stipend that used to come with the full-tuition award is no longer automatic, and there’s only one (ie., internship OR study abroad OR research/conference funding.)
Thanks for posting that info.
I submitted my app a couple of days ago.
