<p>Many scholarships are intended to go to financially needy families - the 1040 would be a way of documenting the family’s need. (That being said, I understand your concern about providing that info to outsiders — I would be very reluctant to provide that sort of info without some strong assurances of confidentiality).</p>
<p>You’re often asked to provide your SSN on the application anyway. It makes alot of people uncomfortable. I blacked out the SSN on our tax forms and requested they assign an applicant id number instead.</p>
