I got a letter in the mail today!!! Very exciting!!!!!

I got:

Gold National Scholarship (4300/yr)

Bentson Family Scholarship (5k/yr)

Undergrad Research Scholarship (1700 for one year)

blstrs…Congratulations on your scholarship offer!! D1 is still waiting to hear on potential scholarships, but it’s great to hear that the offer letters have started going out. Nothing in today’s mail, but hopefully she’ll hear soon. Congrats again…and Good Luck wherever you choose to attend!!

The scholarship folks said they sent the (scholarship) package after Thanksgiving. Hopefully it will reach us by Christmas! Heard that in addition to the ones you mentioned, my S can get National Merit Scholarship from Minnesota if (a) he becomes a finalist, the results of which he will know in mid Feb. 2011 (b) he designates U of Minn as his first choice.

mk13bball…Congrats to you also!! Did your letter come today as well?

Trinity7…D1 is also a NMSF, so we’re counting on that money also. Hoping they’ll offer her the Gold National (we’re OOS from MI) and maybe a little more to cut into the amount we’re currently gapped. Keeping our fingers crossed!!

Wolverine86, your D can likely expect to get 10K/Yr as a Gold Scholar (National Merit) + they may also offer her Gold National, which will go towards meeting in-state tuition for 4 Yrs + other nice things such as Bentson Family + Presidential ($3K/Yr) + likely research $ for 1 year + may be additional scholarships from her major! Good luck.

Trinity7…From your mouth to God’s ears hopefully!! We’ve been driving ourselves crazy looking at the list of university-wide scholarships wondering which she might actually be offered. She’s eligible for several, but so are a lot of other applicants. Not sure about the Bentson since preference is given to Jewish applicants, but we’re hoping for a nice package overall. At least we should find out something in the near future. Good luck to your S as well. What other schools is he considering?

Yea I got mine in the mail today as well. Thanks guys.

Does anyone know if they usually offer all scholarships at one time or of it’s possible for me to get more? It seems like U of M gives out very nice merit money for a reasonably priced school! I’m from Illinois and I’m not expecting any aid from U of I even though IS tuition here is more expensive than OOS at Minnesota

Wolverine86: You may want to contact the admissions on Monday and inquire. There may be some really good news. BTW, we are not Jewish, but the scholarship person at U Minn said my S was offered Bentson Family; I guess my S for the past 3 years has been involved with organizing monthly Soup kitchen for feeding the homeless and that may be reason why they chose to offer him that.
Also, if your D wants to go to Michigan State, I heard that they will seriously look at scholarship offers from other Universities that are members of Association of American Universities ([Association of American Universities](http://aau.edu/about/article.aspx?id=5476)). MSU may make some adjustments to their merit offer; perhaps they may not match but who knows? BTW, your D, if she applied to MSU should have received an invitation to appear for Distinguished Alumni exam weekend in Feb. Also keep in mind that Wayne State Univ. provides fully ride to National Merit Finalists. ([Scholarships - University Scholar](<a href=“Scholarships - Wayne State University”>Scholarships - Wayne State University)).

My S just applied to Case Western, Rice and USC. He had also applied not too long ago to Pitt, received his admissions and is waiting to hear from them @ merit scholarships.
U Minn has a highly ranked Chem E program that my son is seriously considering, but there are still 6 months before enrolling during which time he might change his mind? …

Trinity7…Thanks for the info regarding the Bentson, and about MSU. D1 had not applied there, mainly because she’s interested in pursuing a PharmD degree and would prefer being able to do her undergrad at a campus that has a College of Pharmacy as well. She had considered Wayne State but we have an irrational fear of sending her to downtown Detroit. She’s been accepted at Ohio State, Auburn, and Alabama and is waiting to hear on her EA app to U of Mich with everyone else. I’m almost afraid to call Christine at the admissions office again…not sure how many calls it takes to constitute stalking :-). It sounds like your S is a wonderful young man. I’m sure wherever he chooses to attend will be lucky to have him. Thanks again. Good Luck and God Bless!!

mk13bball…My understanding, limited as it is, is that you may get some additional scholarship offers from the particular college you’ve been accepted to at a later date. D1 has been accepted into CBS, and I know they have several $1K one time scholarships for freshman but I couldn’t find and info regarding exactly when they send out offers for those. Check out the website for your particular college to see what they might have to offer. Good luck!!

Wolverine86, your D is blessed to have perfect scores all around, and as such, imho, the Universities are going to compete to have her enrolled at their institutions. It remains to be seen whether it takes the form of showering scholarship $$$ or adding extra inducements in the form of study abroad at prestigious univ, undergraduate research with some well known faculty along with being groomed for some great post graduation scholarships such as Rhodes, Marshall etc. With such a scenario, I believe your D will likely have some difficulty in selecting a Univ from among all of these great institutions she has applied. I am positive she will do well where ever she chooses to enroll. I guess, equally important in making the final decision is to assess how she will fit in with the general student body (= fit).

BTW, I have a few kids of my friends attending Wayne State on full rides and haven’t heard any complaints.

Trinity7…I agree completely about “fit” being just as important as any other factors in our children’s choice of where to attend. We didn’t realize how blessed we were with the doors her test scores, etc. could open for her but we’re thrilled and excited for her and whatever opportunities lie ahead. She enjoyed all the campuses she visited, but her feeling when she toured U of Minn was especially strong. We’re really hoping things play out like you described to give her as many fantastic options as possible. We’re both blessed to have the children we do. Of course…it’s clearly all due to exceptional parenting!! :-)

Great news!! D1 got her scholarship offer in today’s mail and it was VERY generous!! Combination of her (pending until February) National Merit money with other university-wide scholarships gets her extremely close to a full-ride for OOS student. We couldn’t be happier for her!! Good Luck to all still awaiting their letters. :-)

^ No, I’ll be visiting in the spring. Of the schools I’ve visited so far, Northeastern was my favorite so we’ll see how UMN compares. On paper, it’s my top choice, so this is very good news!

^ I hope you enjoy your visit in the spring. D1 visited the campus last summer but I wasn’t able to go. She absolutely loved the campus, but it was a fairly quick stay on one of the scheduled campus tour days. We’d like to get another visit in sometime this winter if we can make the logisitics work.

Hi wolverine, care to share what does your daughter like about the campus and also what didn’t she like about the others that she had also visited?
