Scholarships?

@Applicant7 unfortunately I don’t think they would ignore your SAT score. You could always, if you haven’t already applied, try the temple option.

@Applicant7 I’m sorry but I doubt they would do that. I also think for scholarships, you need to present an SAT or ACT score regardless. Temple hands out scholarships based on GPA and SAT criteria alone.

Applicant7, you can appeal. Deadline to do so is on scholarship chart. what Temple will do with your appeal i don’t know.

i understand your frustration. although it worked out for him at Temple, my kid had great CR score, decent math score, and good GPA with no AP;s due to limited options coming from a rural school. i thought the CR and overall great SAT score from small rural school would carry him further than it did in college admissions and scholarships elsewhere.

The good news is it worked out great for him and he is happy where he is at. Despite your frustrations now, trust you will end up a good school for you with some scholarship. Being a valedictorian is not an easy goal to maintain so congrats to you on that achievement.

Hey guys, when I logged into my Temple portal, it said my mail acceptance letter would arrive within 7-10 days. In your experience, has this been ample time for the letter to arrive? I am really eager to know if I got the scholarship money or not haha so any prior experience knowledge would be appreciated!!

@cookiestar Yeah when tuportal told me that I got the acceptance letter 7 days later. I do live really close however, so I’m not sure how distance affects it.

@elvesnshoemakers

Oh ok that’s good news for me! Thanks! Hopefully I will find out over winter break.

Happy to report that I as offered the Presidential Scholarship AND have been invited to Fox Business Honors

Does anyone know, what we pay from pocket after getting presidential scholarship - I see full tuition covered + $4k twice etc… how much it comes to room and board , meals and books?

There are different options that cost different things for R&B at Temple, and obviously books depend what you take and where you get your books.

https://housing.temple.edu/housing-and-dining-costs/room-rates - housing

The $4k twice is specifically for summer stipends, to pay for study abroad or research or an unpaid internship, etc.

around 16 to 18K a year out of pocket with pres scholarship. my kid is a sophomore with this scholarship

Just found out I’ve recieved the presidential scholarship at temple!

Thanks for reply @ctl987. is this 16 to 18K for OOS student out of procket after presidential scholarship? also how is it 16 to 18? is large portion just dorm room and meal plan?

should be close for oos but you’ll need to add in some more for travel.

son;s room this year is $11300 for apt for 12 months. he has pricey housing so taht can be trimmed depending on where your kid lives. we also pay around $15 a month for renters insurance. Dorm for mine in 2014-2015 were around 9500 (he did not need renters insurnance when he lived in dorm as he was covered under our homeowners while in dorm. that may vary by insurance provider).

meal plan for freshman year was around 3K to 3.5K if i remember right. he had 12 meal plan first semester and then 10 meals weekly second semester on the “eat anywhere plan” Food for him this year should be around 3K, maybe less, if your kid is willing to make own meals, food could be trimmed even more.

Rest of expenses were travel, incidentals, laundry. books, entertainment, bedding, clothes, minor medical expenses, and school fees. all combined was another 4K more or less. We got him a computer which was the last $1500 in costs. he was already on my health insurance plan so i did not include health ins costs in above figures cause it was not anymore to keep him on my plan when he started college.

Thank you @ctl987 for detailed reply. Appreciate it. If we end up taking this offer and have further questions then will pm you.

by all means! i;ve got a sophomore now so i;ve learned some things  but i also remember when he was still in hs and all the planning during that time.

I posted a while back that I was disappointed with how Temple calculated my son’s GPA for purposes of scholarship awards. Based upon his SAT score he was eligible for the Presidential Scholarsihp but his GPA (which was 3.18 UW and 4.09 W) was calculated by Temple to be in the range of the Founders scholarship.

I sent an email to tuadm@temple.edu asking about the process for appealing and including some information about my son’s situation. Their reply was that since our high school’s weighted GPA is calculated on a 5.0 scale they simply converted his W GPA to a 4.0 scale. So they did 4.09/5.0 and then multiplied by 4.0 to come up with 3.27.

While I would have liked a better outcome, at least the methodology they used to determine his W GPA for their purposes is clear.

So for others who are wondering whether they might be eligible for one of the “automatic” scholarships, make sure you compare your stats to the criteria using a 4.0 based W GPA. That, plus your SAT score, should allow you to predict what scholarship you will be awarded. Note that you must remove non-core courses from your GPA before you do that calculation.
