I have read all I could for the night about this on google but so far I have gotten no where. I am currently attending Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, Illinois (even if you do have hurtful comments about it please share), and I have been doing my fair share of extra curricular activities in and out of it (Phi theta kappa, rugby club that also makes me participate in community service, on student employment because I am an international student.). I am really keen on becoming a computer engineering major, and I so far I have a 4.0 GPA with 48 credit hours worth of mathematics, physics and a bunch of serious electives like Political science and American History. What are my chances of getting scholarships as an international transfer student that will significantly decrease my cost of attendances? I’d really like to save the extra back breaking buck. Do you think I should apply to schools like Stanford? I am really looking forward to applying to Texas A&M university for that OOS tuition waiver, let me know your thoughts about that. Everything is appreciated, even criticism. I need some feedback on this because my academic advisors just tell me go go read bout it online.
Also, if you can tell me your thoughts about the University of New Mexico, I’d really appreciate it. I just got my acceptance there and I am debating going there because it is not too expensive. Thank you!
Your chances of getting into schools like Stanford are very remote. Does TAMU have a large enough transfer scholarship to get the OOS waiver? How much can your family afford?
UNM has a solid but not top-ranked CS dept. (Inside top 100 nationally.) ABET accredited. Lots of cross-pollination (research, internships) in sciences/engineering with Los Alamos and Sandia National Labs–though your international status will be an issue since you may not be able to get the security clearance needed to work at those installations.
Other than the labs, not a lot of CS jobs in NM right now. Intel has a large presence nearby but it’s mostly manufacturing. Facebook has broken ground on a new data center in Los Lunas (about 30 miles from UNM) that expected to open in 2018.
if you need financial assistance for college, you may want to consider New Mexico Tech. They offer scholarships to international transfer students.
Thanks everyone for replying. Erin’s Dad, my family can afford to pay my tuition but the issue is that I am trying to keep them from hating me two or three years from now haha! Thats the main reason I am trying so hard at the moment. TAMU may have enough for me if I qualify for both International scholarships and transfer scholarships, but for some reason non of these harbor a big enough scholarship for me to qualify for instate tuition. I have been trying to contact them for a while now, but it seems as though they have been swamped with phone calls which is not likely in my favor.
I doubt TAMU will work out for you. I don’t think they would combine an international and transfer scholarship. They started making it harder to get that in-state waiver when they moved the scholarship $ requirement up.
UT Dallas unfortunately does not do too much for international transfer. But those websites you sent, especially about University of Nebraska is actuallly very very helpful, thank you so much for that!
