scholarships

I don’t think they’re really looking for well-off families because I’m poor and received great financial aid.

I understand your frustration Susie59! My family doesn’t have any financial need but it seems I have scores qualifying for merit scholarship (32 ACT/3.9 unweighted GPA/#15 out of 500/8 AP classes) and I didn’t receive a dime. Other universities of similar merit offered me awesome scholarships, so even though cost isn’t a factor, I’m very seriously considering the schools that recognize and reward how hard I’ve worked. I don’t mean to sound like a sore loser, though!! I really am excited for everybody received merit aid for their work, I’m just confused about the selection process. I’m sure Pepperdine will easily and happily give my spot to somebody else

Susie59- There’s no reason to generalize Pepperdine’s financial aid policy based on your experience alone. Pepperdine works to accommodate needy students. It is only because of the generosity of Pepp’s merit and need-based aid that I can afford to attend.

If you feel so strongly about it, you should appeal. Otherwise, good luck to you and your son as you select the right university for you. God bless.

I received merit money last year with a 32/2140/3.7 UW at a private college prep school, so it sounds like we’re about the same level. However, it sounds like the applicant pool and selectivity of Pepperdine might have been up significantly this year. I would probably appeal it anyways if I were you.

I have no idea if this info will be helpful, but my D received the Dean Scholar award. She will graduate with a 4 UW from a private prep. She’ll have 12 APs (all 5s so far) and a 2250 SAT. Her SAT IIs: 790 Chem, 770 Math II. She has quite a few awards and ECs (like most everyone on this thread probably) including NM. She’s also a nationally ranked athlete. She’s still uncertain where she’s going. She most likely will wait until the last possible minute. Anyway, for those who asked what the stats were for any of the Dean recipients, hope this helps!
