Scholastic Art and Writing Awards 2015-2016

One silver key and two honorable mentions. Does anyone know how prestigious the honorable mentions and the keys are?

There was a girl from my school who sent no less than twelve writing pieces and got gold keys for around four or five of them.

@photogeek8

Silver + honorable mentions are regional awards. Still accomplishments because there are a LOT of submissions per region. Gold keys get you to the national circuit and a chance to win scholarship money(?) I think. Free trip to Lincoln Center?

I submitted eight pieces to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for the Southeast Region at Large. I won a gold key for my writing portfolio. I also won three silver keys and three honorable mentions for my writing. I am so excited!!! Do you think this is worth mentioning to colleges?

My daughter received a Gold Key and was given this information:

REGIONAL AWARDS

Gold Key: The highest level of achievement on the regional level. Approximately 7 – 10% of all regional submissions are recognized with Gold Key Awards and all are considered for national-level recognition.

Silver Key: Approximately 10 – 15% of all regional submissions are recognized with Silver Key Awards.

Honorable Mention: This Award recognizes students with artistic potential. Approximately 15 – 20% of all regional submissions receive Honorable Mention Awards.

She is a senior and was told by her GC it is important and to send this update to her college admissions officers.

Won a gold key in poetry and a handful of silver keys and honorable mentions (Northeast WRAL)!!

oh and @bsdsj22 I think you can only win scholarship money if you win a national medal for your art/writing portfolio. otherwise, it’s just an invitation (no free trip, pretty sure) to a national awards ceremony at Carnegie Hall.

I got two gold keys, three silver, and an honorable mention! Congrats to everyone, whether you won something or not. Keep working and remember that art is very subjective. One of the pieces I got gold for I submitted to a much less prestigious writing competition about a year ago and got nothing for it…just goes to show that luck plays a part! Keep creating :slight_smile:

Three keys for writing- two Gold (Flash Fiction and Short Story) and one Silver (Humor). This is my first year entering so I’m just excited all my works made the cut. :slight_smile: I’ll have to submit more next year

Does anyone know when the Chicago writing region will send their results?

I’m really disappointed that I only got a Silver Key and an Honorable Mention (poetry, West WRAL). I got the same awards last year for pieces that were, in my opinion, 5000 times worse. And some of my favorite pieces failed to win anything D: (I actually don’t really like the piece that won the Silver Key–or at least the version of it I submitted.)

I submitted mostly photography (like 5 pieces) and 1 poem and got nothing for my photography :frowning: but at least I got honorable mention for my poem!! Wooooo!!! I’m looking forward to submitting again next year!! :slight_smile:

Congrats everyone! :slight_smile: I just got notified that I received a Gold Key for my writing portfolio for my state - does anyone know likely it is at this point for me to get a national medal (basically how many portfolios are forwarded from state level to national)?

Out of the three poems that I submitted, I received a Gold Key for one of them. It’s pretty exciting! Congrats to all of you who have received awards as well!

I have good news! I emailed Scholastic and they told me that winners for the Novel Writing category will be announced in late April, because it takes longer to read them! I still have a chance!

@sophiedoo62
I calculated and there is about a 30% chance of winning a national medal for writing portfolios.

Also for anyone that got a gold key, when you login to the system and go to your submission forms and click preview for one of your pieces does it show up? Mine don’t show up anymore when I try to preview them. I am just worried that it means that I have already lost and they already discarded it from the pile.

There are about 200 Gold key winners for writing portfolio.

Last year, there were 8 gold medalists and 19 silver medalists. It is really competitive.

@isaf33 Thank you for letting me know! And I just logged in - the same thing happened to me. Maybe email them? :confused:

I got two honorable mentions for poetry, and a gold key for humor, northeast WRAL! Does anybody know when we hear back from scholastic? I haven’t gotten an email or letter or anything yet, and I’m excited to get my key!

I’m so nervous for the national results on March 16th!! Good luck to everyone that received a gold key or american visions/voices!

How does the American Vision/voices exactly work? It says that it chooses one per “region.” Is region like the state?

Does anyone know when the National awards will be announced? Also, will we receive some sort of notification when they are?
