@qeertktkrndbfntn LOL! I’m submitting 2 short stories and 2 Fantasy stories. Since writing is more my forte, more so than art, I think it makes sense
And yeah I’ve submitted my first piece to Scholastic last year and it was a fun experience
Thats nice! Good luck
@qeertktkrndbfntn Thank you! You too
I’ve been wanting to submit something to Scholastic since freshman year but really haven’t until this senior year. I have tons of work but idk what to submit or to what categories!
@Lunarlitgend I was thinking of submitting to the portfolio category for sure and thinking of submitting some photography and fashion design pieces as well. I have some paintings too I was considering
@lovnothin Dude if that’s what you want to do then I suggest you go for it! I mean you’re a senior, so might as well take up this opportunity and make sure to pour your heart and soul into it too!!!
This year I’m planning on submitting a ton of works. Probably some screenplays and short stories, as well as some memoir pieces. As someone who did Scholastics last year, and won nationally, I just want to tell all of you new people that it is possible to win, and even if you don’t, don’t get too worried about it. Scholastics is just a contest, like any other, and it’s subjective. Winning means a lot, losing doesn’t mean anything. The point is, shoot for the stars and don’t worry too much about the consequences! Good luck!
@FlameAlchemist PREACH DUDEEEE!!! I wanted to submit a lot of works too. I went from wanting to submit 12 pieces though, to 4 pieces and now to 2 or 3 pieces, and that’s because of the tight deadline. I wrote all my stories but because of the serious overwriting problem I have, I have to cut down my word count and of course, it’s tedious and time-consuming. I just finished cutting down one of my pieces but it’s a piece I love so much, to a point where if it was all I could submit I wouldn’t mind it. (However, Scholastic is known to choose our worst works over our best works so I have little confidence it’ll go far -.-). But, now I’m cutting down the word count of my 2nd stories. I honestly don’t mind because these are my best pieces and as I said multiple times, less is more. One story though that I loved and really wanted to submit to Fantasy/Sci-fi I decided against because I’d have to cut out a lot of words and the details and descriptions that make up the story are really important. I can attempt it but I doubt I’d finish in time. It hurts a lot but oh well, life isn’t fair I guess. But I definitely plan on doing something with that story rather than letting it sit and collect dust
By the way guys I know it’s a little early, but just in case you didn’t know, I discovered the National Scholastic Art and Writing Awards Winners will be announced on March 12th, 2019! Which is amazing, because it’s even earlier than last year! So less waiting
Hi everyone. If anyone is looking for help in either poetry or short story, I think I might be able to help. I won a gold medal in Poetry in 2018 and a silver medal in Short Story in 2018 as well. Also, best of luck to anyone submitting
hey all! i won a gold key in seventh grade for poetry and two honorables in eighth. is anyone here experienced with entering in the critical essay division of it all? thanks.
@marxism I’m afraid I’m only entering in the Short Story Category, I’m not the best when it comes to essays but I’m sure someone on here will be willing to help ^^
Thank you
@marxism not critical essay, but journalism if that helps at all!
also ditto everyone on submitting a lot of stuff haha
@marxism Don’t worry about the submitting-a lot-of-stuff thing–honestly I’m kind of regretting doing it this year, because I feel like I’ve been writing and submitting more quantity than quality. Besides, I only submitted four stories last year, and I did pretty well. I think smaller amounts of submissions allow you to really perfect what you’re sending in, and get it polished and well-written. At any rate, I doubt it’ll hurt you! Good luck!
@FlameAlchemist I’ve really been polishing the pieces that I’m sending in. Last year I sent in an article on a whim that compared 13rw (the tv show) to deh (the musical) and although it wasn’t terrible there were a ton of errors in it and I’m confident that it would have placed higher if it had been more polished. So this year I’m being super cautious with every piece I send over this year so that the same thing doesn’t happen again.
This news will probably be a big shocker to you guys, and would probably shock my ambitious past self who lost Nationals last year, but I’m only submitting two pieces. Both in the Short Story Category. I feel pretty paranoid about it because you know, the more the better. But they’re honestly my best pieces and my third piece I really wanted to submit to Fantasy/Sci-Fi but I don’t think I can because it’s just really long (7,000+ words), and I feel like cutting it down to 3,000 or fewer words would take out so much that makes the story the story. I could attempt it but I doubt I’d even have enough time to get it ready, especially with everything I already have to do in terms of school.
I have my first story ready and my second story I’m polishing right now and cutting down my word count which happens to be at (4,300+ words) which is completely manageable. It’s definitely not a drastic difference in the number of stories in comparison to last year and to me that’s scary, but might as well take my own advice of ‘less is more.’ After all, I did manage to get a Gold Key with just one piece and I feel like that happened because I wasn’t focusing on so many pieces at once. Well. I’m just going to finish polishing my second piece and once it’s ready, proofread it and my other piece, pay, do a sign of the cross (oops I let out my winning secret LOL XD), and honestly…just hope for the best.
If you guys want, I’d happily share my pieces with you to look over and see if the quality really does overcome the quantity of it all. I would appreciate what you guys have to say, truly. Meanwhile, I’ll just be here crossing my fingers as if my life depends on it, for regionals at least. I’d rather focus on making it in regionals before even considering Nationals because that’s just going to set me up for disappointment :p.
@Lunarlitgend i hope it works out in your favor!! im sure all the energy and time youre putting into polishing a few pieces will give you better results than just submitting a bunch of ones that aren’t great quality. i’d love to read any of your short stories! im submitting a ton of work this year, though i might try to cut down the number in the next few weeks haha
@dreamthief001 Thank you so much and I guess you’re right! Is it okay if you send me your Email, cause I can send it to you through there. My Email is IsanePrimlon@Gmail.com
