about a month left (30 days) until national results come out! i heard they’re judging the regional gold keys already
@jxl637
Ohmygodddd. Don’t remind meeeeee. I like fantasize about winning but then I gotta be realistic too…
Has anyone on this thread gotten results back from the Chicago region? Nothing’s been posted on the website yet
Congrats to everyone who won an award! I know this is really far in advance, but can anyone explain the process of entering? I’m thinking of submitting a critical essay and drawing but I don’t think anyone has ever entered from my middle school before and my teachers don’t know about it. Thanks!
@allyxyz Entering is actually fairly easy. I’m not sure about the arts application, but I know for writing all you have to do is create an account and it will take you to an online portal that is fairly intuitive.
When you want to submit a work, you would click add work and it will pull up an application like thing that asks you stuff like the title, category, and to paste your work. You also need a teacher who will help you out and be the verification that what you submit is your original work. After all of that, you download something called a submission form and then mail it to the appropriate address with your submission fee or fee waiver. There may be extra writing stuff to do if you try for a special award like “Gedenk Movement” or “RBC Flaunt It”, but generally it would be something like how does your work relate to our mission.
A list of all gold key winners from every region is up http://www.artandwriting.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Feb-2017-Gold-Key-Comprehensive-List-Final.pdf
@QMusic thank you so much, this was really helpful!
@jxl637 Can you tell me where you found this list? Was it on the Scholastic A&W Facebook page, Twitter, …?
Never mind - found it. It’s on the artandwriting.org site.
Hey guys - does anyone know what to write underneath “Please describe uploaded files” in the “My Uploads” section of the SAS scholarship application?
@Poptartlover000
I wrote about what each file WAS. Like, “file #1 is a short story titled, ‘…’
File #2 is …”
Or you can simply put the context or each file I guess. Like, “This short story was inspired by, blahagdffsf”
@AlmightySadist
Ok, thank you so much!
I calculated, and based on 2016’s results, the chances of winning a national award after winning a regional gold key are around 15-24 percent (depending on the category, generally the more popular ones are more competitive; for example, sci-fi/fantasy entries have a 24 percent chance of winning whereas poetry has a 17 percent chance)
@jxl637
Oh my. I only have one poetry gold key, yikes. Then definitely not gonna get awarded lol.
@AlmightySadist Same! But my gold key is for short story, another popular category. I’d have more hope if my short story was actually good but it sucks, so… yeah.
@jxl637
Oh my loorrddddd. I’m looking back at these submissions, and I caught 2 typos. Ughh. Shoot me.
@jxl637
The ones for SAS.
@AlmightySadist Happens to the best of us. Don’t worry too much, a few errors here and there won’t get in the way of your overall body of work
Hey guys! Long time lurker here haha
For the SAS scholarship, are we required to put down references? And will our references be contacted for things like rec letters?
@xlhx33
I think I didn’t put down anyone… Or my guidance counselor. I don’t think they require rec letters. I didn’t see anything about that.
