Scholastic Art & Writing Awards 2016-2017

Okay, thanks! @AlmightySadist

2 weeks until national notification

Only about 5% of regional submissions won a gold key this year, so that’s a big accomplishment. We should all be proud of ourselves no matter what the national decisions are :slight_smile:

@jxl637
You right you right. =D>
I try to push nationals to the back of my mind. I’d like for it to hit me as a pleasant surprise rather than a build up of disappointment. Kind of like how I focused too much worry time on SATs and then I saw the score, which confirmed my fears and I cried for the next week. However, forgetting about it might just have me mildly upset, not inconsolable. :))

Hey, do you guys know when we know whether we got the SAS scholarship or not? I remember it’s in April, but can’t remember the exact date.

And I’m anxiously waiting for March 14th, even though I’m trying to not get my hopes up. (Remarkable, really, since my name is Hope haha.)

@HopeTsai April 5th!
Me toooooo. My stomach churning at the thought. Ughh. I’m high key petty so I’ll probably just not post anything if I don’t get anything tho.

Hello everyone!
I’ve applied to the Scholastic SAS programs for this year (qualified with gold critical essay, two silver short stories). Does anyone with past experience with SAS know how selective the programs are? I’ve applied to Iowa (yeah, probably not getting in), Kenyon, and Juniper. Fingers crossed!

@saintliar
Idk how competitive it might be. They offer it to anyone with silver or gold key, which means THOUSANDS of kids are competing over a few scholarships. I’m not sure if winning a medal will help odds or if they only judge from the gold key look.

@AlmightySadist I certainly hope so! I know a couple kids from my school who won awards and didn’t apply for SAS, but I don’t think that’s applicable throughout the country. Sigh, I wish there were more stats online for me to spend hours poring over.

@saintliar
Me too honestly. I hate that they’re so vague and no one really writes articles analyzing these awards and who wins them. You’d think with 330,000 submissions and 93 years of existence, there would be statistics SOMEWHERE.

@AlmightySadist Ah ok, thanks!

One more week, but I’m trying not to focus on that… I have two more years to go though, so… I mean obviously I want to have a national medal but I still have time…??

desperately waiting for the national results

@HopeTsai
Ooo, you’re a sophomore then? I’m a junior so I have next year but not really in time for college apps. I found out about the program last year just SHORT of the deadline.

@ArtistNatureLove
Same here friend. Like, one minute I think Ima win GOLD and the next, nothing.

right right, like i want a gold medalist but at the same time everyone is so talented

@AlmightySadist

@ArtistNatureLove
But then again, glancing through the gallery on the Scholastic page, some works totally deserve their award and others were very sketchy and sus. :-?

some of the pieces that win are literally amazing and have me wanting to aspire to write like that, and then other pieces i look at and wonder if the judges were drunk or something when they passed it through

@jxl637
Right?? Some are the pinnacle of basic but are rewarded with gold medals while others deserve wayyy more.

@AlmightySadist Yep, I’m a sophomore! I found out about it last year 'cause of my English teacher. ^^

@ArtistNatureLove @jxl637
Creative writing’s really subjective, and sometimes they’re looking for certain stuff, so even if a piece is really good, they might not like it or think it’s original/innovative enough while another person does. Ahhhh

@HopeTsai
I guess I might not win for innovation this year then ahhaa.
:frowning: But I’m still hype. I want this week to breeze by but I don’t wanna know the truth either. IT MIGHT HURT. :((
