School forms question

is it possible to see the letter of recommendation before i assign the teacher to a college?

and when a teacher submits a letter of recommendation, do i have to use that one or can i choose the one i want?

or would it be better if i asked them to do a hard copy?

It is possible to see the letter if you do not waive your rights to see them however, it is customary to waive your rights so your recommender can write an unbiased recommendation about you.

You can invite more than 2 teachers to write recs for you via the common app and then assign the number the school allows when you do their applications. Some only allow 2 teachers or one teacher and one counselor. Some will let you assign more. Depends on the school. It is best to have a teacher who teachers a core class: math, science, english or history in your group.

Uploading their rec to the common app is the easiest for everyone. At our HS however, teachers had to print a hard copy and give it to the counselors to have in your file. Then those recs could be sent to non common app schools or if somehow the common app school did not get it, it could be mailed by the counselor.
