Hey,

I'm going to IU next year, not as a music major, but I'm planning on minoring in the general music area. My question is, does anyone know how hard it is to get into the University bands by audition if you're not a music major (not counting the band where you don't audition)? I play tenor saxophone, am the section leader in my band and was the section leader in our all district band (I didn't try out for all-state). So do I have a chance?

I don't know a lot about this from a non-music major perspective, as my son is a music major. But I think you would have a chance for a band. The only problem, I think, is that music majors are required to be in an ensemble, so they may be placed in bands first. (I'm not sure about this; you may want to email the Music School and ask.) IU is an amazing place for music, and there are numerous opportunities to perform and to hear excellent music, so I hope you will be able to get what you want out of the experience.

An update... I asked my son your question. He said he does not know of any non-music majors who are in the bands, other than the one band you mentioned. Since ensemble participation is required for music majors, they do get preference. He said a non-music major would have to be exceptional to get in the regular bands or orchestras. Sorry!

ha well thanks anyway... good luck to your son he must be amazing to be going there for music, maybe i'll make it in somehow you never know!
