This is a question I have wondered about for a while. Do UCSC students generally adore the place where they go to school, and have a lot of "school spirit," whatever that may entail? Do the students adore the fact that their mascot is a banana slug, and brag that they go to Santa Cruz? Is the slug and all it represents celebrated on campus, and worn on most t-shirts, and plastered in every dorm room? Or, are students generally not enthusiastic about their campus, or even slightly embarrassed about it all?

I'd love to hear your responses.

These are simply my opinions. Don't let them influence your responses:

Personally, my girlfriend and I think that the banana slug is the greatest thing we've ever seen, and we've already ordered slug paraphernalia from the bookstore despite the fact that I haven't even applied yet, hehe. I have much enthusiasm for UCSC, more than I have ever felt toward any other UC I have considered attending.

I am going to be a freshman at UCSC this fall and I have to say I am really looking forward to being a banana slug. I have heard that there isn’t much school spirit at UCSC but I believe it’ll only happen if we start making it happen. I think everyone should get involved and be proud that they are current/future banana slugs. It’s up to us to change the way people look at our school!

At the very least they are proud to have a banana slug as their mascot. It’s EVERYWHERE. Visit their book store and go to the clothes section. There are even banana slug slippers. I think most UCSC students love the outdoors and are the environmentally conscious type, so it’s no wonder they love their mascot.
But I also did get the impression that there is a fair amount of school spirit. Most students seem happy to be there.
