my school says unless you are enrolled in the AP class, you can't take AP exam. but collegeboard says that anyone can take the AP test if they want to. who is right?

the reason I am wondering this is because I can't take AP bio because I got a c in chemistry for one semester. however, I would like to be able to take the AP test for Bio because I am good in the subject and I know for sure i could self study.

could I fight my school on it and force them to allow me to take the test? its not like they are the ones paying for it either, so isn't not allowing me to take the test like against collegeboards rules?

That sounds really wrong - you should definitely look into it.
This year, I took the US history test without taking the AP class for it at my school - I did fine. By not allowing you to take the test, they're really holding you back. I hope your school finds some sense, and lets you go through with the test. Best of luck.

i think your school doesn't want people to take the test if they haven't taken the class because it will reflect badly upon them...if they have more kids who fail the test, their reputation goes down, well at least that's what my school is like...

you should fight and try to prove to them that you will be ready to take the test. the ap test is administered through your school so i really doubt you can do much about your school's policy

if your school won't budge, then contact AP coordinators from local high schools near you and ask if you can register to take the test with them.

yeah they don't want you to take the class unless you're enrolled in it because they think you'll score poorly on it and it will make the school's rankings go down.

ok i guess when it comes time to sign up for the test I'll argue with them and stuff and if they still won't listen then I'll try to take it at a different school.

but, for sure i have the right to take the test, right?

Counselors usually say that to scare you from taking the AP test without the class. They think that students would be "unprepared" without the class.
You should contact your school's AP coordinator(in my school, it's the AP Cal teacher) or another school's AP coordinator to take the test.

I took AP bio as a class. It was my teacher's first year teaching it, so a senior in my class self-studied it while she talked. That senior got a 5! She already found out through her college's web site. She used the Barrons book. I don't think I did as well as her. I think I will get a 2.

okay, you can self-study and take the ap bio test. i did that for my sophomore year, and i never took the class. except, the actual ap bio teacher gave the the textbook for me to study with. the school can't prevent you from taking the test, although they can give you "advice." you pay for the exam, and join the rest of the kids on the test day. and true, the school might be worried about their reputation--b/c the teachers and the school do really get their "averages" and reflects on their record. but...i'm pretty sure one student can't hurt that bad, and who knows. you might do well. i got a 3 on ap bio without taking the actual class, and the ap bio teacher was actually amazed at me. and i didn't put too much effort, and i'm not the best mc taker in the world. you have the right to take it (and the collegeboard allows self-study), and i would at least commit to it the best of your ability.

and it really depends on what college you want to apply to. b/c the competitive schools will look at the numbers more, but with smaller schools, when i told them that i "self-studied", they were impressed, with the hint that if i actually took the class, i would be a potential 5-er.
