Schools good for video game design, business, art

I've seen other parents posting questions about school recommendations for their child, so I thought I'd give it a try as well.

Any schools that come to mind have all 3 majors available: video game design (more the art side of it rather than the computer science side), undergrad business, and art?

For video game designing apply to Univ of Southern Cal, Rochester Institute of Technology, Drexel University. For undergrad arts apply to Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Bowdoin, Middlebury, Pomona colleges. For business undergrad apply to Stanford, Chicago, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Northwestern, etc.

Google the Princeton review rankings and then visit the websites for the top ten game design programs. Some lean more towards over game design ( story building, level design, etc), others art and others game programming. Many are rooted in computer science which may not be what you are looking for.

Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

The #1 video game design (called Entertainment Art I believe) school is at the University of Utah…you should check them out.

You are apparently talking about art history. (And there are plenty of other good programs.) The OP appears to be leaning more in the direction of studio art.

Of these, Harvard and Chicago do not have undergrad business majors. I don’t know about Stanford. (Of course, we all know that a degree in economics from a top school is a fine way to enter the business world, but that was not what the OP asked for.)

You might want to check out Northeastern. I know a kid who majored in video game design on the art side there, and has been working in the field. I believe they have the other two majors also. And the coop program can offer a valuable step up int the working world.

Univ of Penn has a Digital Media Design major
[CG@Penn | DMD Program](CG@Penn | DMD Program)

It does have a pretty heavy workload in comp sci, but isn’t that a part of game design? I may be wrong, I’m not sure.

Ringling College of Art and Design.

I’d second USC (Southern Cal) for the combination of these three areas of interest

RPI has it all. It’s not a full studio art program, but rather in “electronic arts”, but that sounds like what this kid is interested in. [Academics at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI)](Academics :: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI))

I believe RIT and WPI have all three programs.

Also check out Case Western Reserve University/Cleveland Institute of Art Game Design [Game Design | Cleveland Institute of Art College of Art | 800.223.4700](Game Design | Cleveland Institute of Art College of Art | 800.223.4700)

CWRU has business as well.

I don’t know what GA and test scores your child has, and I don’t know your geographical requirements, but DePaul University in Chicago has all three fields (although studio arts may be a minor only).

Yay!! You guys are awesome! Will definitely look into all of these schools. And yes, it is studio art as opposed to art history for the minor (video game design or undergrad business for the major) and no geographical nor financial requirements. Definitely keep the suggestions coming :)

My S is also interested in video game design as well as computer science. I’ve been trying to put a list of colleges together that have this major. Check out the link of the top 50 schools with game design.

Worcester Polytechnic University–I’ve heard great things about the program in video game design. Worcester (the city) is a sorry place, but WPI is in an OK part of town.

The University of Montevallo has an amazing college of fine arts, business school and an incredible minor in game studies and design. I don’t know what part of the country you are considering. Good luck.

Here is a helpful article from a long time industry veteran, it talks about the arts side and the CS side, the video clip is good too, with different info:
