Schools that have Theater Tech?

I’m looking for schools that have theater tech - lighting, building sets, etc. I appreciate any tips.

Check out Drew University in Madison New Jersey

University of Evansville in Indiana.

University of Cincinnati.

Lots of schools offer this as a major, do you have a particular geographical location, school size?

And are you looking for a BA or a BFA?

I am looking for a small to medium school that also has Japanese and a study abroad program. No particular geographical location.

For a school to have both Japanese and Theater Tech you may have to compromise on the “small to medium” size. Googling around a bit I’m finding mostly larger schools that have both, like Ball State.

Willamette University in Oregon has all three characteristics, though it’s a BA in theater with an emphasis in design or stage management.

4gsmom, What are you Googling to find schools that have both?

Boston University, University of Michigan, & Carnegie Mellon all have both. CMU is a medium size school.

Colorado State & University of Colorado Boulder

as craspedia pointed out, CMU has a fantastic technical theater program, but i might add that the acceptance rate to their school of drama is 3%

I think the acceptance rate for Design & Production is a lot higher than 3%. For Acting and MT it’s one of the hardest to get into. I’m happy to ask and report back once my D finds out her decision.

CMU is definitely on our list. I have heard that Technical Theater is maybe not the best degree to get if you want to actually do Technical Theater as a career, that perhaps English or Creative Writing or something else is better. Any thoughts?

@TiredMom1101 I just googled “university major japanese theater tech” and Tulane popped up; Ball State, BU, Syracuse. You might have to go into the university website to be sure they have both, but so far, all that popped up had both.

Just one caution, some of the conservatory style theater tech BFA programs are jealous of their students’ time and may not allow a lot of flexibility in their course selection, so even if the university has other programs of interest, it may be difficult to take advantage of them.

Thanks for the heads up!

I would recommend checking out playbilledu.com as a good search engine for exactly this type of question. School size, major, location, etc can be used to find lists of colleges to look at. It is not perfect (no structured search engine is) but because it is focused on this field it has better capabilities than similar services such as the ones at Princeton Reciew or the College Board.

My cousin majored in theatre tech at University of Massachusetts and studied abroad his junior year in London. I don’t know if they offer Japanese but as a large state school, I would like a likely possibiility
