Schreyer Honors College Class of 2020

Hi everyone,

I can’t seem to find a specific thread for the honors college applicants so I figured I’d start one since decisions are being released in two days! It’s just easier to have a specific thread and to condense all questions, stats, etc of Schreyer applicants in one space. If this is a repeat thread, mods/admin, feel free to move it if necessary.

Anyway, good luck to everyone who applied.

I had been looking for a thread too but couldn’t seem to find one. This year sounds like it was the most competitive yet, ahh I’m sure I won’t get in, but it’s okay. I wasn’t selected as a finalist for the Millennium Scholars Program so I figure my chance at Schreyers is little to none. Oh well two more days.

Did anyone receive the email yet about the decisions tomorrow?

@amomoffour Yes, yesterday.

Thank you. The Gmail sends it to “Promotions” instead of the in box, we were expecting that

@NICE8x I was not a millennium finalist either, so extremely worried.

I didn’t realize how truly competitive Schreyer is until a few days ago. They accepted 300 out of 3,721 applicant last year. That’s 8%. Yikes.

@Kasami I read that they accept about 600, to make a class of 300 freshman, assuming some decline their offer.

They had 3900 applicants this year!

@tucitcennoc That’s still only 15%. That’s SO competitive!

Retracted; you’re right (https://www.shc.psu.edu/counselors/profile.cfm). That Onward State article is super misleading, then.

Just a few more hours!

Good luck, everybody – we’ll be glad to have you!

I’m counting down the minutes… Good luck!

It’s already posted

Denied. Oh well. Congrats to all accepted!

My D was just accepted OOS
After many months of stress!!
We are so proud to become a PSU Family!!!

Just curious if people accepted were willing to post any stats (GPA, extracurriculars/leadership, how good they think their essays or interview if they did it were…).

I was accepted!!

Accepted to Schreyer & Millennium Scholars Program today.

*Response to NICE8x and for kids that search this page in the future.

GPA: 3.91/4 UW
ACT: 31
EC’s: Plenty
State: VA
Black Male.
Essays: #2&#3 probably got me in.

1 - Said we essentially needed an amendment for privacy in this brave new world.

2 - Began with an honest description of where I'm from. Then, we moved, and I informed them that I wanted the rest of my life to be a world tour.

3 - My changed belief was that I went from thinking I had to "find myself" to realizing I had the vision to just create who I wanted to be. Jlivsvision.

Interview: No Interview.

Comments: Congratulations to everyone accepted and to those that weren’t for having outstanding resumes. I hope to see you all next year.

@NICE8x Here are my stats if you’re interested. Sorry it’s so long; I just copy/pasted and edited to fit PSU from another thread:

Decision: Accepted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 2300 superscore (770 CR, 730 W, 800 W 11 essay)

IB (place score in parenthesis): None
Senior Year Course Load: AP Environmental, AP Calc BC, AP Lit, AP Seminar, AP Microecon, Honors french 5, band/chorus/orchestra

Select Choir Section Leader (9-12)

Job/Work Experience: Writer and on executive board for local newspaper
Volunteer/Community service: Generic volunteering, attended a governor’s school for business
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8/10 I thought my last one was the best. I wrote about my dislike of babies (yeah I know, weird) due to their association with the maternal role and their fragility and my own fear of mortality. Tied it up with how my perception of femininity and childhood changed after the birth of my sister.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 10/10. We are very close and she had it written since the summer. I trust her completely and know she wrote truthfully. She showed me after applications and it was fantastic, thankfully.
Teacher Rec #2: 8/10. Didn’t read this one either although the teacher offered. Also offered to write me a letter of recc but I doubt it was anything outstanding.

Interview: I really think this is what got me in. My interviewer and I clicked immediately. I talked about my involvement with stock trading and interest in law and it turned out my interviewer was in law school for finance law so it was perfect. We were the same personality type (INFP) and it was nice and relaxing. Talked about Harry Potter, etc. It was my best interview I had.

Other

State (if domestic applicant): PA
School Type: Public (1900 students)
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: >$250,000
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Absolutely 0

Reflection

Strengths: Interview, last essay, grades, first letter of recc
Weaknesses: PROOFREADING MY ESSAYS. I procrastinated as I tend to do, and I was lucky they overlooked a few typos.
Also Applied: Yale SCEA (deferred), Northwestern, Emory, Brown, Swarthmore, UC Berkeley, UChicago, Cornell

General Comments : Very excited! Seriously considering Schreyer over any other options I may have once all decisions are released. Congratulations to all those accepted! It was a tough year.
