I’ve been accepted at AU and I’m deciding between there and University of Delaware. Preferably, I would go to AU simply to get the experience of being away from home. But, at the same time, I know that I want to major in a science-related field, most likely engineering of some sort. I know that AU is a really good choice for things more along the lines of public relations and the sort. UD has a pretty good engineering school, especially when it comes to Chemical Engineering. So I was wondering what people here think in terms of how their science departments stack up against each other.

AU doesn’t have an engineering program…
The only sciences offer here are: biology, chemistry, biochemistry and environmental science. If you want to be a doctor/engineer or anything go somewhere else not AU. The pre-meds that I’ve talked to here love AU but wish they were better help when it came to the sciences which they aren’t. If you want to do science and the government, come to AU.

AU’s environmental science program is generally considered one of the most “up and coming” in the nation, but besides that our science isn’t world class by far. If you want to do a double major with something in IR or Poli Sci or business and then take on a science major, that would be a good call, but I wouldn’t come to be just a science major unless you’re doing something like Public Health, Environment, Sustainability, Infectious Diseases, or something along the science and government lines.

How would AU be for my daughter who wants to go into forensic science? She would first have to obtain a bachelor’s degree in biology, chemistry, or biochemistry. She has also been accepted to Brandeis, Northestern, Muhlenberg, and Dickinson.

AU is a terrific school for certain fields (politics, international studies, journalism, public affairs–just to name a few) but its strengths are generally not in the sciences). Brandeis is a much better choice for the sciences.

@20questions: unless your daughters wants to do government and foresnics, don’t go to AU. @mengler: depends on what you wanna do, med schools don’t care on whether you have a BA or BS
