Any opinions re: the caliber of sciences at New Paltz - particularly the Environmental Science program?

I’m currently a student at New Paltz. My understanding is that New Paltz is trying to improve the science programs here. In Fall 2012, a biochemistry program and an astronomy program will be offered. In terms of Environmental Science, I think you have a few options. There’s an Environmental Geoscience program that combines course offerings in environmental studies, geology, chemistry, etc. There is also an Environmental Studies minor. I don’t believe that Environmental Science is offered as a major, but I recommend double-checking with the catalog online. You can find all of the major plans online to compare! Also you may want to check out the course catalog for Fall 2012 to see what types of courses are offered.

You may be able to construct an Environmental Science major through the contract studies agreement. I have a friend that did this for Linguistics and she seems satisfied.

I think the programs are fairly solid but you will probably encounter more students in the Humanities. The departments seem small(ish) but close-knit. Hope this helps!

Very informative - thanks so much, nybmc!

Not a problem! Please let me know if you have any questions about the school. I haven’t been on CC in a while, but I will make an effort to check back periodically.

Also something you may be interested in: I’ve heard that construction will be starting on a new science building in the near future. We currently have an engineering building, and two science buildings. Wooster, one of the science buildings, is closed for renovation this semester. In recent semesters the school has really made an attempt to improve programs/facilities.

Good to know. D is still undecided but leaning towards Environmental studies/science. A small and close-knit dept. would be a plus. Not completely willing to rule out English either, so maybe a major/minor, if doable…

Very nice to have your input here. Wonder why CC doesn’t give NP it’s own board??
