I'm not comfortable riding a bike, so I'm considering buying a Razor Pro Model Scooter to get around campus. Is this a good idea, or should I just plan on doing a lot of walking since the campus is so hilly?

You’ll be at Price Center a lot, which has a lot of stairs. Price Center has all of the food court-Jamba Juice, Rubio’s etc.

Most people walk around campus, unless you plan to go to another area of the campus. There are skateboarders every now and then, but there are so many people walking around that sometimes it is not conducive to scooters.

A bike/scooter would be a good way to go if you go to various colleges within the campus but there are roads within the campus where staff trucks whiz by, so be careful.

I recommend just walking - it’s what most students do. It’s also good exercise :)

I’ve probably only seen 2-3 people riding scooters in my 2 years at UCSD

^ Yeah, not a lot of people use scooters, surprisingly. In my 2 years I’ve seen about 12-15 people on scooters. that doesn’t mean they’re not perfectly good to use though. Go ahead and bring one if you like.

on the other hand, I do agree that most people just walk, which works fine and is good exercise. get good walking shoes before you come here. my first 2 weeks of school at UCSD = worst blisters of my life. I burned through the soles of my shoes like you wouldn’t believe.

btw just a side note: there’s a hilarious physics professor who scooters around, especially in Revelle area. I think he’s Jorge Hirsch but I might be wrong. haha

It is Jorge Hirsch!

I tried the scootering route my freshman year. I ended up walking far more because I wasn’t very good at weaving through crowds and relied more on people getting out of my way not to mention the more “cobbled” roads near the center of campus are not comfortable to scooter on. UCSD is very much a walking campus.

If we’re talking shoes, UCSD will definitely test the quality of your favorite soles.

^ I know right?! All incoming students: Make sure you bring good walking shoes. I’m completely serious. It would’ve been so nice if someone had told me that before I got to the point of sticking band-aids on my feet wondering if the rest of my UCSD life would consist of this much walking lol.
it did, but then I got jogging shoes fit for the occasion. So lesson here is to get supportive shoes!

TwylaBoo: hahaha I thought so! It’s so funny watching him scooter into Plaza Cafe. He does that thing where he skips onto the step and simultaneously lifts his scooter up right before it collides with the stair step. I dont know why I just find it so funny to watch

Unless you really just think you will certainly use it, I would wait to make the purchasing decision until you get here and walk around the campus for a while. I used to say that UCSD was fine to bike/skateboard/scooter on in the past even though others on here disagreed with me. I still think it is, but I’ve switched to walking myself. It’s honestly just the safest way to get around because of all the people.

Also I directly heard from one of the campus police officers that they’re going to start cracking down on bike/skateboard rules on campus this year (you can be ticketed for riding a skateboard in the street or on library walk during the day for example). The campus is still scooterable however, but it’s just a decision better made when you get here.
