Scores dropped drastically

Hi guys, so I am writing this for brother who is currently a junior. So in June he got a 2150 on his SAT with 800 M, 660CR, and 690 W. In Octber he got a 2300 with 800W, 730CR, and 770W. He decided to take in December but was disgusted by his scores: 2180- 710M, 740CR, 730W

He is really worrying that despite his superstore going up 10 points, his composite went down 120 point. Will colleges look down upon this and assume that his 2300 was not truly deserved? I know some schools require all scores to be sent and for these schools, how will they look at his score? And btw, plz don’t respond with comments about how he should have been satisfied with 2300 and what not. I told him to not take it again but he felt he needed higher. Thanks a lot.

If he sends all three, then they would see that he got an 800 in math twice out of three tries. (The second 800 is in math, right?) I’m not sure if they would immediately just accept the superscore or if there would be some other thought process involved, but two 800s in a row isn’t an accident. Maybe they’ll assume he just had a bad day on the third try.

Actually he got 800 math first time, 770 math second time, and 710 math third time. He is strong in math( 5 on AP Calc AB sophomore) but often gets overconfident and makes mistakes. June he got an 800 because they canceled a math section he likely got a mistake in

I would think they would just accept the superscore with the 5 as proof that he’s actually pretty good at math. Different SAT dates can be screwy.

It is possible they will look at June as an aberration. But realistically, the scores are all very high and within a small band of one another. (Smarter people than I can tell you how many standard deviations.). It is not as if there is an 1800, a 2300 and a 1680. These are all vey high, very consistent scores, statistically speaking. So I would think nothing of it.

Many of the colleges don’t care how you came about your composite and do not attach the emotional value of “deserved” to any of your scores. But, as Caesaroctopus says, who knows “If there would be some other thought process involved,” which would have them further deliberate about the disparity in the score returns.

You don’t want the comment about the 2300, but it has to happen. At that level, at that point, with commensurate scores in the classroom and across other CB tests, a 2300 says you know how to play at the level of those in the upper portion of the third quartile.

Crafting a profile that conveys the strength of character and commitment to more than just life in the classroom is how they are building the diverse, vibrant communities they are looking for.

Can’t sweat the low return, and there is no reason to sweat the strength of the composite, and worry about the sum of the parts not used. Polish up everything else, and continue to help your brother come over to your side about the process and he’ll feel better in the end because you’re encouraging him to believe he has done all the work he needs to be looked at as a serious candidate.

just out of curiosity, do test dates matter? Let’s say he got 2150 first, 2180 second and 2300 third vs 2150,2300,2180, would colleges prefer it more?
