I really love both Scranton and stony brook, but they couldn't be more different haha.

So I was wondering if anyone has gone to/ has people the know go to either of these schools, and if so, what are some of the pros or cons to either one?

I don’t know them well but I know them. I have been to both campuses, have a friend that teaches at Scranton, have friends who went to Stony Brook. As I remember it, Scranton has an older more stately campus. It is a third the size of Stony Brook, so you’ll get a more friendly environment. Not having all those Long Island spoiled kids around will help too. It’s a Jesuit school so they’ll be some Catholicism in the air - good if you are Catholic. Stony Brook likely has more offerings, which is not relevant if Scranton has what you want. Are you from NY State? If so, SB is likely cheaper, which is very important. SB is probably better known; although I think such concerns are way overrated. Note that my friend who teaches at Scranton is an incredible scholar and great lecturer.

I would be studying occupational therapy, which each have. The only benefit regarding the program for Scranton is that it starts freshman year whereas stony brook starts junior year, but otherwise their equal in that aspect.

I’m still a junior so I dont have any exact prices for either, but stony brook would by about 18,000 for me (in state) without any scholarships, and Scranton runs about 47,000 but according to the net price calculator online with scholarships I’d pay around 25,000

I’ve visited both and like them both, but then again all I know about them is the info they tell you on the tour which may or may not be all true :p

Wait to decide.

What are your stats?

What is your major?

how much will your parents pay?

You should be adding more schools to your list.

I have about a 96 unweighted, 98 or 99 weighted (don’t know what that is on the 4.0 scale). Ranking was 7 out of ~295 as of last year, but may have gone up or down slightly. I haven’t taken my SAT yet but my practice SAT for a review class was a 2030 so I’m hoping to keep that or go up a bit. I would definitely major in occupational therapy.

I am going to apply to both, as well as Quinnipiac, but I like to think ahead and try to figure out which one I want as a top choice :)

My advice to you…Do Not try to figure out your first choice college in your junior year. It is smart to put together a list of schools you like that have a major you are interested in, but you don’t have to pick “your school”…some attributes you think are important now, may not feel quite as important to you in next year…and you don’t have the financial packages yet if that is a factor…pick your two two or three favorite schools and go back in the fall or after you get in to be sure they are what you want…I think all of the schools you mentioned all have EA or rolling and you appear to have the stats to get in so I’d apply and revisit the ones you get into that give enough aid that they are affordable…In terms of specific comments about schools – we visited Scranton and QU and liked both schools – they did have different vibes maybe in part due to the Jesuit influence at Scranton, so you have to choose where you are comfortable. I did hear a rumor that a lot of people go home for the weekend at SUNY-SB so I’d ask around about that.
