Hi, I am a junior student at an IB school in Canada...i've been on this board for a while, lol, nevertheless, i need u ppl's opinion even though we are all high schoolers (well, most of us). Here's my marks for term 1 and 2 (our school's marking system is messed) :

Term 1:

IB biology HL : 95 (A)
IB chem HL: 81 (B)
IB eng HL: 88 (A)
IB French SL: 88 (A)
IB History SL: 88 (A)
IB Math HL: 80 (B)
IB Physics HL: 88 (A)
TOK: 86 (A)

Term 2:

IB biology HL : 91 (A)
IB chem HL: 77 (B)
IB eng HL: 87 (A)
IB French SL: 91 (A)
IB History SL: 84 (B)
IB Math HL: 86 (A)
IB Physics SL: 92 (A)
TOK: 81 (B)

Yes...I ended up posting this on the Harvard forum, sry in advance! but anyone give suggestions? or am i screwed for Harvard etc... btw, I hate IB, and if u r a soph, my tip: NEVER EVER TAKE IB... TRUST ME!

whoaa, how are 77s Bs at your school... and 88s As?? thats madness! I would have a straight A average right now, damn... i digress, you don't know if your chances are ruined, you have a rigorous curriculum and your grades (the letters, not so much the numbers) are pretty good. you never now until you try.

I notice he's from Canada, and the int'l system varies very much. I'm from Singapore originally, and right from 7th grade, a 75% is the highest grade, and it's pretty darn tough to achieve. Hence my great surprise upon moving here and discovering the 93%.

Haha Noone, no kiddding. Only I had it the other way round: went from the american system to the singapore one. Very odd adjusting to thinking that "if I get 75% I'll get an A"-- and to discover that it's really quite tough to accomplish!

you're from canada? I'm from canada too. Trust me, your grades shouldn't hurt you too much. I can't really tell you your chances cause you didn't post your sat and ec's, but yea, the canadian system is different from the us system, so don't be intimadated by the 95+ averages on this board. Firstly cause in the us they weigh averages(whatever that is) and the people on this board are outlandishly resolute overachievers. and people in canada say the us people are stupid. I say canadians are jealous. LOL

It's really funny because I go to a school in Westchester, NY (i.e., as suburban and and as opposite of urban ghetto as one can get), and people still try to use this phrase.

anyways, i dunno if i am screwed bec my school is kinda competitive and hard and some (well, a few) ppl still manage to get straight As...I dunno, maybe i spent too much time on other stuff?

here's my ecs..

Violin (going into Gr. 8 Royal Conservatory)

Volunteer at local hospitals/community centres.
Community centre's council vice-prez..
Top academic grade 8 and 9, grade 10 does not give top academic awards, only subject awards. Top math/science/english award at 8/9/10 levels.

And yeah, i am also the manager of one of our school's sport teams and i volunteer for various other places..><

My parents think that i should give up the Ivies and just go to a Canadian university...makes me feel so ...=(

help ppl, are my activities/grades just not up to par?

Apply. If your school is so difficult that they weight 0.88s to As, then the adcom will recognize that you're working in an extremely competitive environment.

Besides, nothing will completely screw you.

I've noticed a lot of people who apply to Ivies have done science research and published papers. How do you do that?? I'm in awe. Did you start as an intern and then eventually got your own assignment? Did you start doing research every early on, like in grade 6 or 7? Because i know it is extremely hard to publish paper in journals, especially for someone under 18.

lol, for my published paper, i did the entire research by myself, without a mentor. As for the lab, i contacted my job shadow and he suggested there...however, i can't publish anything i do in the lab...=(

I think your stats are great. I'm from Canada so i know how marking is done. YOu are taking 7 IB with 5 HL? i didn't know you can do that. I heard having a regular program (6 IB, 3 HL) is already hard and time consuming enough. Are you doing a IB diploma and regular diploma concurrently? maybe everyone is... but i just feel like asking.

And your ecs are also superb. I hope you don't mind me asking, but when did you start doing science research? I really want to do some sort of research/intern, but I think for me it is too late to do anything truly significant. Any suggestion for me? because i really want to do something, even if it is small like science fair or something

Anyway i think you should for sure apply to Ivies. I dont' know what your predicted IB scores are yet, but it is a shame if you don't try.

Cfuc_4, u r rite that an IB diploma is 6 IB courses, with a maximum of 4 HLs (according to the geneva main office). For me, I'm completing the diploma and an extra certificate in chemistry HL....so ya...

I dun think my ec's are good enough because MOST of the ppl in our school have similar stats as I do...and normally, our school only sends less than 10 ppl to the ivies...maybe bec we are canadians..=( Also, my stats r nothing compared to ppl who were deferred or rejected..so i am really worried now. My parents discourage me and tell me to go to a Canadian university but i have always wanted to go to HYPS...

As for the research, i started in the summer of my soph year...try to contact professors in a nearby university? trust me, try lots, i had to contact approx. 100 profs b4 i was offered the opportunity...thx!

What kind of school do you go to? private? I don't go to a really competitive high school, most of my classmates are not too serious about university. This week i just discovered CC =), and i am so intimidated by what other ppl have accomplished. Some of the stuff i've never heard off, i truly have been missing out.

Btw, summer of soph year, is that before grade 10 or after?
