Hi, I am a junior student at an IB school in Canada...i've been on this board for a while, lol, nevertheless, i need u ppl's opinion even though we are all high schoolers (well, most of us). Here's my marks for term 1 and 2 (our school's marking system is messed) :

Term 1:

IB biology HL : 95 (A)
IB chem HL: 81 (B)
IB eng HL: 88 (A)
IB French SL: 88 (A)
IB History SL: 88 (A)
IB Math HL: 80 (B)
IB Physics HL: 88 (A)
TOK: 86 (A)

Term 2:

IB biology HL : 91 (A)
IB chem HL: 77 (B)
IB eng HL: 87 (A)
IB French SL: 91 (A)
IB History SL: 84 (B)
IB Math HL: 86 (A)
IB Physics SL: 92 (A)
TOK: 81 (B)

Yes...iunno what had happened...anyone give suggestions? am i screwed for ivy etc? btw, I hate IB, and if u r a soph, my tip: NEVER EVER TAKE IB... TRUST ME! yes...done ranting..

Your grades are good, what are you complaining about? The big three-Harvard/Princeton/Yale probably won't like the Bs. But I'm sure if you apply early to Brown, Cornell, or Penn you'll get in.

No, a B is not going to stop you from getting into Ivies, especially in IB classes.

And WHY oh WHY did you take 4 HL classes?! No wonder you were stressed.

I think a lot of people should JOIN IB. I actually liked my experiance. Anyways, back to your post, don't worry about it, B in a very rigorous course, so nothing bad.

in canada, there is a different grading system than most states in america. yes, a 77 is a B. and an 88 is an A. they just lengthen the limits a bit. i wish it was like that at my school, but too bad, i live in america.

i also had a question as well: what`s the difference bertween HL and SL?

In the IB diploma, you must tdo 3 HL subjects and 3 SL subjects. HL= higher level, SL=standard level. Both HL and SL do the core requirements in the syllabus for each subject. However, HL students must do more. Basically, you do a in-depth study of your HL subjects, while you don` t in your SL subjects.

I love IB, although my grades were better when I was doing A-levels. Now I have 4 A's on my 10th grade mid-year report card, 2 C's and 2 D's. The C's amd D's are in the subjects I hate and was forced to take this year (french biology, chemistry- argh i hate this one-, and maths HL). The fourth subject I got a C in is economics (in french), but I like economics very much, it's just that I got a bad grad because of ONE TEST for which I revised the wrong chapters.

I am the one who can say goodbye to the ivies.
You still have a chance. So take it! Take it and get into an ivy! for me!

sigh, first term i had 5 HLs ..2nd term i thought again, dropped physics HL to SL, now i have 4 HLs...
=( and argh, i feel like i have no chance bec some ppl in our school r doing better than me (8 A) and ivies (not just HYPS) only take UP to 10 ppl in the past 100 (very rough estimate, lol) years from our school...

oh ya, that's what i am worried about, my percentages...do US universities look at % and gasp, faint, and say that i am full of D's and C's or would they just consider letter grade?

wow, you get off easy, at my school, 80% is an A and only top 10-15% get that.
americans don't know what kind of marking scheme we have up here
i have an 84% GPA and is top 5/340+
this is what we have to do on our math test(every test, we get 1 special question worth 15%, it is a topic never taught before. On our first test:
using false proof to prove 1=2 and a=2a (for a not=0))
do that geniouses!

lol thats easy its just division by zero and you get that
a=b
a^2=ab
a^2-b^2=ab-b^2
(a+b)(a-b)=b(a-b)
a+b=b
b+b=b;
done. for 1=2 consider b as 1

As for the Ivies, I'm not sure you'll necessarily get in, as they are always iffy with admissions (for anyone). On the other hand, you could easily get in to any Canadian university (with the exception of some commerce programs) - and they're not bad at all. Try McGill, U of T, Queen's, UBC... you should be fine, and those are the top schools in Canada.

As for IB, I'm in it too (I'm a junior as well)... it really makes you work for the marks. I think that it's strange how much grade inflation there is in the US. I do think that universities will realize this though - you are in IB in Canada, so lower grades than others won't be as much as an issue as say, someone who has low grades in regular classes or in the US (generally).

meh...dont worry bout ur grades its not all bad.. im an ib jounior also.. 4 hls also.. ib sux .... nvr in my life have i felt like i was doing badly in everything i tried ...as much as i felt this week..sniff..i remember the good old days when i watched tv, partied, and sometimes slept at ten while getting straight a's...the good old days

my math teacher taught us that in 9th grade to give us all a laugh. then again, he had us doing junior college work in Calc honors. Boy am I happy to be done with math.
