I screwed up my grades a little bit last year(11th grade), due to a very personal tragedy days before the exams I was not able to properly perform on them. I got a 3.1 GPA out of 4.
But I did cover up in 12th grade I have a complete 4 on 4 now.
In 10th grade, I had 3.76 out OF 4.
I have a score of 1550 in SAT.
I also have a few school level and district level prizes for co-curricular.
I have also attempted SAT subject tests for the subjects I messed up in.
SAT MATH: 750
SAT Physics: 760
Even though I messed up in 11yh grade can I still be in competition for good colleges?
Any advice will be appreciated.
Well, its definitely good that you got it together for your final year, and senior year is more important in terms of grades since you are taking more upper level courses anyway. I really wouldn’t worry too much, you have great test scores too to compensate for a dip in grades.
I agree with @Hokie_gl32, your overall grades and test scores are very good, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem. I would consider talking about it or discussing your dip in grades on the common app essay, or any other application essays. This way admissions officers can understand what happened, also shows your successful recovery and perseverance
^ Contrary to the previous poster, I would suggest against discussing the dip in grades in your essays. You can write about the tragedy, but the dip in grades shouldn’t be the main focus (or have any mention at all, really).
Instead, use the “Additional Information” section of the Common App to describe the extenuating circumstances that resulted in such a drastic drop. AOs will look at that section and take your tragedy into consideration.
Shouldn’t the OP already have applied to college, it is already the end of Feb. of his senior year. Most schools deadlines have already passed or there are a few who may have deadlines which are March 1st which is only really a day away. Seems odd to be worrying about this now.
That being said, your cumulative GPA is aprox. a 3.6 with the limited information you gave which isn’t great but not horrible. Whether or not it is enough for the colleges you are considering depends on which colleges those are. Most colleges like to see an upward trend which it looks like you have. But without knowing what schools we are talking about no one can truly chance you.
Yeah. The timing of this thread doesn’t make sense unless OP is taking a gap year.
Yeah I am taking a gap year I should have clarified it above.
I want to apply to NYU and even though I would like to I don’t think Ivy league is possible.
I just wanted to start my prep early and right since I have taken a gap.
