Scripps, Occidental, Santa Clara, USC, UC Berkley

GPA 3.945, all honors courses, best ACT 31, best SAT 1980 ( I suck at test taking) decent EC- yearbook editor, student gov, choir, community service 4yrs. (not required, but liked to do it) miscell. clubs, part-time work in family business, out of state residency. What do you think???

UC gpa, how many AP courses because honors courses don’t count for oos applicant if you have 10-12 AP’s and that type of unweighted gpa you stand a solid chance of getting in to Berkeley. For USC SAT only slightly below but great gpa so I would say match

I go to a “great books” all honors high school, no AP classes available :frowning:

That’s tough Because a high SAT score can show admissions officer that the lack of a single AP course is fine or even if you self studied a couple AP’s to give some indication that you’re on par with the other students. But you still have a decent chance at those schools

UC Berkeley is the best public school in the country, and OP is an out of state applicant. The SAT and the ACT are dumb tests that don’t really say much beyond the obvious differences between a kid with a 2000 and a kid with a 1000. But they’re almost certainly going to doom OP. A 1980 and a 31 aren’t going to cut it at a school where the average scores for out of state admits are 2171 and 33. That’s the kind of gap that would be acceptable only for a recruited athlete or double URM.

I agree that Berkeley is pretty out of reach for an OOS with those stats. For the others, an ACT of 31 is within the middle 50% so they are possible. I do think that demonstrating interest is important. Visit these schools if you can and make sure it’s an official visit where they know you’re there. If you can’t visit, see if they are coming to your area. Are they affordable?

I think your chances are okay, if not certain, at all the colleges other than UC Berkeley. That would be a huge reach for you. If you can afford the out-of-state tuition at a UC, and want to attend college in CA, why not apply to some other UCs? You should try to calculate your UC-weighted GPA, because that will be the most important component of your application. Outside of the ultra-selective STEM programs, I’d say your chances for admission to UC campuses other than Berkeley or UCLA range from fair (UCSD) to solid (Davis, UCSB) to near-certain (the remaining).

Gpa for UCs is a weighted 3.945 since UC’s don’t count honours for OOS so I’d say UCSD is a reach for you Davis and SB are all slight reaches SD average 4.3 Davis SB 4.2 and their formula schools so they assign points for categories so certain number of points for GPA(below average for all the schools) SAT score(average for those schools) number of AP courses(none red flag!) and ECs(IDK but not much weight) so they’re all reaches for you

And then UC Irvine you have a solid shot I believe because it isn’t a formula school so they’ll holistically evaluate why you didn’t take any APs plus ur Gpa is nearly on par for UCI(4.05) ACT slightly above average(31 their average is 30) so you have a good shot at UC Irvine I’d say

@appleomi What’s your UC GPA? I think the other poster calculated it wrong… We need your 10-11 a-g courses, and any AP classes you may have taken.

But regarding lack of AP courses at your school, it may not be a big red flag. Course rigor is evaluated in the context of your school and peers, and if you have no AP classes, then so be it.

@michelle426 i guarantee you this I’m too lazy to go to up and find the exact quote you can do that yourself. But for all UC’s they calculate your 10-11 gpa by giving extra points for UC weighted honours and AP’s but for OOS students none of their honours are given extra weight thus only AP’s are given extra weight and this applicant hasn’t taken any AP’s so his weighted UC GPs is a 3.945

http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/q-and-a/calculating-gpa/#6 Check in the section of calculating GPA FOR OOS students

And I quote,“In calculating a non-residents gpa,Uc will grant honours weight for AP or IB courses only, but not for, school designated honors courses” directly from the university of California’s page from calculating a OOS residents GPA, so his UC GPA is 3.945. @michelle426 do your research before saying someone else is wrong

@BucketsUCSC I am a California resident  I know all about how the UCs calculate GPA, and how they do it for OOS kids. For now, OP provides us with her presumed 9-11 GPA, especially since the UC GPA does not account for essentially anything outside of the CA public college system. For all we know, she could have gotten straight A’s freshman year, and some Bs in 10-11 that will lower her UC GPA, or vice versa, or just scattered Bs throughout. How about instead of jumping on my throat, we wait until the OP provides us with her 10-11 a-g courses with grades? After all, her UW UC GPA will be the same as her capped and fully weighted UC GPA.

True I’m sorry @michelle426 I forgot the fact that she didn’t provide her 10-11 only gpa
