D got the Provost Scholarship. Half tuition and entry to honors program.
Average+ CA public high school.
Top 3% of class, though school only ranks by decile.
4.00 UW. 4.36 weighted. Taking the most rigorous course load her school allows.
9 APS, including 5 this year as senior. 3 5s and one 4. Lots of honors.
NMSF finalist
No Sat or ACT due to cancellation.
ECs include bassoon and saxophone all four years. Editor in chief of school newspaper (think this club/role is what she got the scholarship for, since Provost scholarship is awarded for leadership. Excellent rec. letter from club counsellor.)
Homework tutor at local library for two years.
Congrats to your D! I thought for sure that D would be up for the Provost too because of her leadership in yearbook and in other ECs too. I know her one teacher rec talked about her leadership capabilities in her rec too. Maybe they would have liked to have seen a 4.0 uw GPA. Lots of kids at our school end up at top twenty schools without all As but I’m starting to think that, without test scores to back her up, D won’t be getting the largest merit anywhere.
Has anyone received anything in the mail yet from SCU. Because I remember reading somewhere that they were sending something soon but I haven’t gotten anything yet.
We received it in Chicago today. Honestly not that much to it compared to what S19 got from some of his schools. This packet is the letter that’s online, a small flag and a six page piece with just a little more info on the school with important dates.
Responding to “luckwillcome” question on loan rates, The SCU FA office indicated the below rates are for the current year but subject to change for the 2021-22 academic year. Hope this helps.
Ford Federal Direct Loan (subsidized and unsubsidized): 2.75% (orig fee is 1.057%)
Little late to the party here, but our award was almost 30K below the no. generated by the SCU NPC (when run spring 2020 and again after the award).
The NPC was one important tool my student used to put together the college list. Left wondering whether the SCU NPC simply “presumes” a scholarship the school really does not have available to give out in many/most cases. Has anyone that was accepted but got an award that was dramatically lower than indicated by the NPC followed up directly with the FA folks?
Our own family circumstances have not changed, so the “appeal” form doesn’t seem to offer an opportunity to improve the award. But her academic stats seem very comparable to those shared by folks who received healthy scholarships, so I don’t want her to knock SCU off the list altogether if there is still room for an adjustment later this spring.
Award was approximately 25k less than NPC…since then have received 3 other ea acceptances with money more in line so SCU is still there but moved from top selection to “Break in case of glass” status.
Called FA and frankly they were quite dismissive so we have moved on…hope this helps and Happy New Year👍🏻
If you peruse older threads, then you’ll see that SCU appears to be quite frugal with their financial and merit aid at least in the last few years. I assume it’s supply and demand.
Right now, SCU is our one and only EA decision, so it’ll remain in the final equation until the CA publics release their decisions in March. And if SCU makes the “finals,” then we’ll plan to see if they’ll increase their merit aid in April.
