SCU Class of 2025 EA

FA doesn’t come from LMU until mid-Jan even though decisions come tomorrow.

that’s great to hear that theres still a possibility to go to a good college. thank you so much

Ahh that’s right…forgot.:+1:t2:

Does anyone know if appealing the financial aid package is a good idea? if it worth it in the end do you think they’ll give me more? and who should I contact to do that?

To me, everything is negotiable.

@Mwfan1921 is someone very knowledgeable in this area.

I also believe everything is negotiable!

Regarding ‘negotiating’ with colleges, best to not make it seem like a negotiation and to have better offers from peer schools…those are what are most likely to move the needle.

Also, like last year, depending on a school’s yield is looking in late spring, more money may become available, so don’t burn any bridges!

Edited to add: If your family has had a change in income, or job loss, etc., that is a different story. Then, each school’s FA has something like a “change in circumstances” form that you would fill out seeking additional aid based on lower income. It’s called ‘professional judgment’ within the FA office.

Thanks for the advice …have a nice night.

It says on the site if they are renewable. Ours are and I assume everyone’s are. $50k in merit aid is insane. How much was each scholarship if you don’t mind my asking?

Nice! That’s a lot of money to be sure. Congrats!

Thanks to everyone for your updates and insights. The post with the SCU email response was especially helpful. It seems that some of the links like the “Shopping Sheet” which is supposed to breakdown the estimates for tuition, housing, books, loan fees, etc. is not up yet (at least when I checked on Wednesday night). Once that is posted, I think it’ll provide better clarity on our out-of-pocket “investments” in our kiddos.

On some misc. items (based on my personal understanding and I am by no means an expert). I’m going to do some personal digging and also contact the SCU FA office to make sure though.

  1. Our letter was very clear and itemized the grant and loan amounts per funding source and quarter/trimester.

  2. Grants and Scholarships are “free money” and do not have to be repaid.

  3. Federal Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans are just that, loans. I believe these are via FAFSA to help compensate for the costs. I believe Subsidized are when you can show need based. When I did a quick web search, it indicated interest doesn’t accrue during the time frames (i.e., during school) - sounds like it’s just fronting money.
However I believe Subsidized do accrue interest during school so not as favorable.

  4. I think most people on this thread got the majority of Scholarships and Grants via CSS and not FAFSA. Although not very high, it’s all from SCU so collectively I think they are just trying to spread the available money from their endowments and scholarship funds to as many people as they can.

  5. Their website Scholarships and Grants - Financial Aid - Santa Clara University (scu.edu) has some better information on the various scholarships and grants.

P.S. work-study programs, paid internships and part time work is always out there as options to offset costs too : )

Our GC (small school) had only seen one case like that. My understanding is that it’s very rare for SCU to put out that kind of merit aid money. Congrats! :tada:

Yes, they may be hearing from me in April.

Does anyone know anything about scholarships for international students? Are they eligible for non-need-based financial aid and if yes, what’s the average amount? What can be the maximum grant etc?

Academic Scholarship Programs - SMU

Wrong thread. This is Santa Clara not SMU.
