SDSU vs Cal Poly SLO for Business? Open to suggestions

I’m currently a high school-er and is going through the college admission process. I am looking to pursue a Business Administration degree, specifically Marketing. I’m not a great student so probably schools like UCLA or UCB is a no-no. If you know anything regarding to SDSU or Cal Poly SLO or perhaps any other suggestions (within California), please help me out. Some UCs I have heard of (with good business program) are UC Davis and UCI. The factor that I care about the most is regarding the job placement, internship, etc. Thanks for any inputs!

they are both great but, hard to get into.

As you can see here - CPSLO Biz admits had a 4.12 GPA and 1410 SAT

I don’t have a direct link but, for SDSU, 3.75 GPA and 1200 SAT will probably do it.

The good news, most of the CSUs have credible business majors and are more accessible to the average student.

With your stats we can help you find a couple that will be a good fit.

Another idea to consider - there’s an association of public colleges in the western US called WUE. They offer big discounts to applicants from other western states - One UC and several of our CSUs participate - If you have a decent GPA - someplace like UNR, Boise State or U of Hawaii can cost the same (tuition) as a CSU.

As with everything college - there’s lots of nuance to it but you can read about it here.

If you are not a great student, what are your current stats since SLO, SDSU, UCI and UCD are competitive schools. Think around a weighted GPA around 4.0 or higher, SAT scores around 1300+ and ACT scores around 30+.

UCD has no Business school but they do have Managerial Econ or Economics but nothing geared toward Marketing. If Marketing is your focus, then the Cal States would have more options.

All schools have career centers where you can give information regarding whom recruits at each campus for jobs and internships. Most of this will be up to you to make the connections and use of the resources available at each school.

UC GPA capped weighted = CSU capped weighted (10-11th grades only for the a-g courses with a max 8 honors points for UC approved Honors, AP, IB or DE courses taken during this time)

SLO GPA= CSU capped weighted (9-11th grades with the 8 honors points weighting).

You can use the Rogerhub GPA calculator to give you an idea of your current GPA for these schools.

What is your local CSU? https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/freshman/documents/csulocaladmission-serviceareas.pdf

Some Business school suggestions depending upon your stats: UC Riverside, Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Fullerton, Sac State, Cal Poly Pomona, University of San Diego (USD), University of San Francisco (USF), Santa Clara University, Loyola Marymount (LMU), Chapman University, San Jose State, University of Redlands.

I’m taking the IB Diploma and my last semester GPA was 4.47. For SAT, I will be taking the test this May.

The only GPA that counts is the UC/CSU (CP) GPA not your HS’s GPA unless they calculate your weighted GPA just like the UC’s and CSU’s.

What is the UC/CSU scale? At my school it is on the scale of 5.0

The CSU/UC scale is 5.0 but they only use 10-11th grades and not all HS designated Honors classes are recognized for the extra weighting. IB/AP and DE courses are given the extra weighting along with any UC approved Honors classes but with a cap of 8 semesters (4 year long classes)= Capped weighted

Fully weighted would be an unlimited # of extra honors points for these courses.

The UC’s have a Unweighted UC GPA, Capped weighted UC GPA (maximum 4.4) and a Fully Weighted UC GPA (maximum 5.0)

The Cal States only use the Capped weighted CSU/UC GPA with a maximum of 4.4.

Cal Poly SLO is the exception which uses 9-11th grades in their CSU GPA calculation, maximum 4.4 GPA and only 10-11th courses are weighted. They also use an MCA point calculation which did have a cap of 4.2 GPA but this may be outdated since the average of the College of Engineering last was over a 4.2.

Here is the UC GPA calculator link again: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/

You can look up your HS weighted classes (Yellow star next to the course) to determine the correct weighting here by typing in the name of your HS.

Alright, thank you very much!

It is really important to know your CSU/UC GPA since many students this year got a false sense of security when applying to these competitive schools based on their HS weighted GPA and ended up being denied or waitlisted. Best thing you can do when forming a College list is do plenty of research and arm yourself with as much knowledge as possible in regards to their admission criteria and application review procedures.
