SDSU VS UCSD

Planning on going into finance / banking career possibly financial manager or financial analyst in the future. SDSU has finance major BS but UCSD only has economics BA major. Which Would be better? Which will help me get a
Better job. Planning on MBA eventually as well I like UCSD better but will the economics major be worse than finance?

SDSU has a HUGE business Alumni network with a very good reputation at job placement because of lots of connections from the professors and career placements. It is a very competitive, impacted program.

Apply to both and see where you get in.

Both are very good.

Not your question but, get into several schools then make up your mind.

SDSU is kinda selective, UCSD is very selective.

Good luck

Thank you for answering. Yeah sdsu has a much bigger program so as far as becoming a financial analyst it seems better to go there. I’m sure I will get into both schools 4.0 and 1740 SAT. I plan to try and join the sdsu equity fund investment group. Investment banking would be my overall greatest goal but it’s very challenging and hard to get into from less popular colleges. SDSU seems like the better option. Thank you.

An SAT of 1740 is low for UCSD with an average of 2035 last year. I wouldn’t be so confident of your chances there. SDSU is probably a Match. Calculate your Eligibility index for SDSU. 4100+ is competitive.
(CSU GPA x800) + ( SAT math + CR)

With a 4.0 and 1740, you won’t be competitive at UCSD unless you have some pretty outrageous ECs.

Apply anyhow - you never know with UC admissions.

For business in SoCal, UCR, SDSU, CSULB and Fullerton are all worth an application.

I’m just not sure if it will matter a lot if I go to UCSD over SDSU or the other way. SDSU has my exact major, finance b.s. And they have a student run equity fund that i would like to get into. If anyone has any details about the equity fund and if it’s hard to get into then I would love to hear about it. Thank you. UCSD has an economics major B.A. which seems more big a broad topic. I’m stuck between these two schools. And what the advantages of each are. I will also apply UCR.

Do you want to work in San Diego after you graduate?

I plan on working where I can find the best job. San Diego would be nice but I am not against going up to LA or SF or New York if I’m lucky.

Would a finance B.S. Be a lot better compared to economics B.A. for employers?

I’ve spent my whole career on the accounting side, but I can give you my $.02 (which is similar to the advice I’m giving my daughter as she is choosing schools and majors).

Generally I would think finance > econ, but there’s a little more to it than that. If the school offers a business program, then finance is probably a better choice than econ. If you are talking UC undergrad with no business school (UCLA, etc.) then those econ majors do well in the work force.

I say apply smartly and hopefully you’ll be in a great position to choose the best fit for you. Talk to the career services at the schools to get an understanding of who is hiring and from what majors.

If you are REALLY interested in trying to get into investment banking, then consider getting GREAT grades (even at community college) and transferring to a target or semi-target school. It’s not my world, but there’s tons of info on this site and others on IB.

Good luck!

I am interested in trying investment banking and I believe can get great grades in community college as I am very dedicated. The problem is I wouldn’t be able to transfer to a better higher up target school because I have no money for college it would all be loans and that’s quite stressful at a young age. That’s why I like sdsu with low costs and a business school. Seems that many financial analyst and positions like that require finance major or economics so I’m not sure how much of an advantage SDSU would be. I’m interested in investment management, investment banking, financial analyst, financial manager. Investment banking is not my only goal though. But if I get a great gpa I will try it. Hedge funds also seems very rewarding and would be worth trying if I ever get the chance. But also quite challenging.
