Second Bachelor’s in Accounting/CPA Requirements

I am interested in obtaining a CPA, and I am looking at what I need to do in order to fulfill the education requirement. I have already graduated from a 4-yr private university in political science (a total of 132 credit hours).

I saw on the CPA website that 150 hours are required (along with 33 semester hours in accounting). I was wondering if I entered a second bachelor’s degree (in a 4-year state/city) program in accounting and took the 33 courses needed in accounting would that fulfill the requirement or would I be required to also graduate from that second program with a degree in accounting.

I am working full-time (and would be doing this part-time).

As long as you fulfill the educational requirement from your state board of accounting, you should NOT need another bachelors degree to get your CPA license. Those 33 units on top of your degree should get you to the 150 hours.

Good luck!

Many universities offer a MS in accounting for non-accounting undergrads.

For Master’s degree programs, most of them seem to require accounting or business as a prerequisite. The exceptions I have found are UNC, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, and UT-Austin. However, I am currently working in NYC and have fairly flexible hours and would prefer not to leave my job if possible so I am looking for something I can do in the NYC area.

Baruch doesn’t allow second bachelor’s degrees, however other CUNY schools do appear to allow it (Hunter, John Jay, etc.).

I have also not completely ruled out doing a MBA in the future, so this is primarily just to get the courses I need to qualify to sit for the exam. Also, the tuition appears to be cheaper for the bachelor’s programs.

I am hoping I can just take the accounting coursework (just the 33 hours) – is the registrar able to provide a transcript of your courses even if you don’t graduate the program?
