Does anyone know about 2nd interviews with Columbia Univ.?

carlos - post the question in the Columbia forum.

Hi there, I am a current Harvard student. I had a second interview, and I think my stats were about average. I probably got the second interview because my first interview was quite bizarre-- the interviewer mostly asked questions about interviews I'd had previously (how old they were, where I met them, what they asked). So if you get a second interview, it's possible that they just couldn't get enough information from the first interview, not that you're a borderline applicant.

suburbian - That's nice of you to share your experience with the current applicants. For reference, was your second interview w/ an alum or was it an on-campus?

suburbian, my Princeton interview was much like the one you described. My interviewer was a recent graduate who kept asking me if the admissions process was tough, how many essays I've written, etc. I was really disappointed and wish that I could've had another chance with someone else.

smoda61, do you think that having an alum or on-campus interview makes a difference? I'd just assumed that location determines the type of interview you're offered.

Countryangel - I have no basis for speculating whether a second alum or on-campus interview is any different. I am guessing that it's main purposes are the same, which is to gather additional information for the admissions committee to make their decisions.

All the feedback I got from my daughter about her experience was similar to everyone else's who had the on-campus interview. It was very comfortable and positive w/o bizarre debates. Again like everyone else, she felt very good about how she presented herself and I am very curious how things will turn out in four weeks.

One funny thing was, as we arrived at admissions we ran into one of my daughter's good friends/peers who was also there for a second interview. Neither of them had previously wanted to mention to the other about their second interview out of concern for the other's feelings. I guess in the process it shows that it is really hard to tell how many of these second interviews are given.

That's funny about running into your daughter's friend there! Come to think of it, I only told a few friends about my second interview, and I remember having no problem with it because I knew that they hadn't applied to Harvard. Several people in my school applied, and for all I know, they all could've had second interviews too! (It would be unlikely, but you get my point...)

Anyway...less than a month to go before we find out if that second interview helped. :/

Like you, D did tell a few friends, but all of them were ones that were not applying to Harvard.

I had a second interview a couple years back when I was applying - it was with the regional director of alumni interviews, and he told me that the first interview has provided the adcom with insufficient info and a second interview was necessary. I then asked a teacher at my high school, and he told me that I'm either a borderline case or that there was simply insufficient info. No way of truly knowing, either way, good luck!!

Thanks for the info, Tony! I'm pretty sure I'm borderline, but you're right, there's no way of truly knowing.

is it possible for an international student to have a second interview?

Logically, I do not see why it could not happen but I don't think that I have read of any on the CC threads. When I went through CC threads from the past years, I only found 6 members who referenced a second interview; four in spring '06 (FlipstaG, ChittyChittybangbang, applegirl and ultimatemath), none in '07, and two in '08 (AY8888 and Dukefanswimmer89). When I was looking for prior members, I did not notice where these applicants were from. This thread is by far the longest dealing with this issue.

You can consider looking at the old threads yourself. Good luck!

smoda61-- My second interview was off-campus, but I believe my second interviewer was more directly affiliated with the admissions office than was my first alumni interviewer. Sorry I cannot be of more help!

Good luck, everyone. Harvard is a great place. :-)

Suburbian - thanks for getting back.

And Tonyt - thanks for passing on your experience as well

Suburbian, that is absolutely true of me too.

physicsistic - I just found more notes from two weeks ago ( I had scribbled comments on the back of various pieces of paper). Apparently, my '05 notes slipped into other papers. In '05 I came across three members; Mea, Zahra, and Shostakovich. The other thing that I am noticing is that my notes state that Mea indicated "asia" under location. Interpreting that, I might conclude that Mea is an international that got a second interview. BTW she is attending Princeton though.

This link was just posted on another thread but I thought that I'd give you guys:

Gives you something to think about!

My interviewer didn't really ask a lot about academics- score wise. That form looks like it has a lot about objective traits?

Thanks for posting the link, smoda...it was really interesting to read through!!

I was amazed this the form was available online and that the other member had a link to it. But it is interesting to sit back and think about the interview(s) and try to speculate how the interviewer might answer the various questions about you.
