Second Person Essay

Hey.

So I've seen one thread on this already, but I didn't feel there was a lot of discussion of the topic; more of yes or no sort of response trend. I have a full essay written in second person at this time. It's incredibly personal, and deals with themes of efficacy and control. I honestly don't believe I could have told this particular story in any other point of view. Due to the experience and closure I gotten out of writing this paper, it seems an obvious choice for my college essay, but I am antsy about the second person bit. I guess my question would really be on anyone's opinion of using experimental literary technique in their essay. Yeah?

Anyhow...

Sounds creepy. First, this is a college application essay, so I tend to think the appropriateness of some writing you got closure from might be outside the scope. It seems more like something better suited if they are asking you for a piece of writing rather than your essay. Did you have an adult read this, a teacher perhaps? Find your way over to the essay forum.

As with most experimental ventures, it could win big or it could fall flat. I agree that you should have someone you trust and whose judgment you respect look it over.

Any reason, now that it’s all written, that you can’t recast it in the first person?
