hey everyone, i'm currently a theater major considering transferring, and i was wondering if anyone could list some schools they know of that have auditions to join their musical theater programs second semester.

i know a lot of schools don't make their decisions until they complete the round of fall and spring auditions, but i'm hoping to find some schools that will give a decision shortly after fall auditions so i can make an immediate switch if accepted.

Marymount Manhattan accepts MT transfers however you will not be able to take any theatre classes, except for maybe Script Analysis or Stagecraft, until the fall semester since our acting and mt classes run on a yearly schedule. However you could get some gen eds out of the way during the semester before.

I think you will be hard pressed to find a BFA in MT program that takes mid year transfers because most BFA course outlines are set up on a year by year sequential basis without much leeway to just begin at any time.

James Madison University accepts a small number of 2nd semester transfers. Students could declare the BA Theatre Concentration, and then audition for admission to the BA Musical Theatre Concentration in April.

Students at JMU may audition for musicals and take many of the MT classes on a space available basis (usually also based on an audition) regardless of concentration.

Kat...I think it is more doable in a BA school. The BFA programs have a lock step curriculum semester by semester and so entering mid year doesn't fit into the sequence. There is a bit more leeway in a BA program, generally speaking.

I would agree that this would likely be more possible in a BA program. I think that in most BFA programs transferring to the university and THEN auditioning to transfer for the BFA program (usually to start in the fall of the following year), could be very risky.... particularly because many BFA programs are "closed" programs... meaning that the only students who can take the courses with majors are students who have auditioned for an been admitted to the BFA program. Even at a school like JMU (a BA), this would be a little risky for the student who ONLY would be happy at the school is they were in the MT Concentration.

I think it is probably (as usual :)) best to check with each school directly in terms of what might or might not be possible in terms of mid-semester transfer. Make sure to check with both the admissions office for the university or college, and the specific department.

One BFA program to look at is Western Kentucky. If I read their materials correctly all students (whether transferring into the BFA MT program from the BA program at Western Kentucky, or another school) must have completed 30 hours of college before they are eligible to audition for the BFA program. This could possibly work for a student in the fall of their sophomore year who might be looking for a second semester transfer... or for a student who is a freshman at another school, because no one in the program can audtion for the BFA until after they have completed 30 hours.

My daughter transferred mid-year to Elon her freshman year and is now a Senior graduating on time! They said she had to audition in the Fall for a Spring semester transfer so she did. I said 'why waste time where you don't like the program'. If she had waited I don't think she would have been able to finish in four years. It worked out great!

A friend of mine transferred to Columbia College last year at second semester, and I believe he went right into the Musical Theatre Program. They don't require an audition which makes it easier to do so. Check it out!

Kent State University, in northeast Ohio, has on their website information re: auditions. Locate audition information on the School of Theater and Dance section. They state that students who audition at the Nov. 14-15 audition will be considered for admit to their program for Spring '09 or Fall '09.

Coastal Carolina University. A BA program with BFA credit load, high quality faculty, plenty of performance opportunities, etc. We accept transfers at semester. Auditions are Nov. 8th.

Showmom, Your post brings tears to my eyes. I got to see your lovely daughter perform at Elon last weekend.

I can't believe that I was with you the very day she heard that she had gotten into Elon and was going to transfer at semester! Three years sure do go by quickly!
